This is my 2012 custom deluxe strat. I bought it second hand a couple of months ago but it was virtually like new when I got it, not a scratch - even the clear plastic covering was still on the back plate. On the custom shop website it says that the 2012 custom deluxes have a poly finish. However after 2 months sitting in the lounge in front of a window the paint on the back has started to yellow - which would indicate to me it is a nitro finish.

The paint job on it is unusual. Most 2012s were a sunburst of some sort as far as I can work out. My question is, is there anyway I can work out for sure if its nitro or poly? Image

Thanks

The standard custom deluxe that year had a quilt top.
Yours is a limited edition from that year I think.
Fire off an email to fender at consumerrelations@fender.com
They may be able to give you the specs if you give them the serial number :D

It shouldn't indicate that. Daylight fading is the pigments being bleached by UV light, not the lacquer.

To reduce further fading, a good automotive carnuba wax can help - they protect cars from fading, and the nitro that Fender uses is basically car paint (in the old days, it was car paint).
Unless the guitar has a satin finish, of course.

I was under the impression that the paint itself could be nitro or poly based and the nitro part was more susceptible to yellowing? Is that not the case.

I got the details back from the custom shop after enquiring. Turns out it is nitro. Its a 2012 custom deluxe built to 2010 spec with a custom finish. A bit weird I guess. Theres no indication as to why it was built like that. Perhaps a customer request?

Yellowing, yes. Fading, no. Two different processes.
