I actually love the amp, but once it gets above 4 ish it get starts to fart out a bit. I have read a bunch of different stuff about different mods so it will not do that. I'm not sure what the truth is, but I have read maybe better tubes would work. I have also read it's the transformer and they might be a touch weak.

My DRRI is just rock solid in tone as the volume goes up, but sometimes it's a bit over kill for recording.

I might search the forum after, but I'm just familiarizing myself with the Fender forums now.

Any suggestions as to what I should do first. Brands of tubes etc.

Thanks in advance

A speaker swap will present the biggest sonic improvement.

Any particular one, that would keep the princeton tone, yet keep some thump in the bottom end.

An Eminence Ragin' Cajun or a Kendrick Black Frame would put some beef into the bottom end. If your pockets are really deep, give the hemp-cone alnico Tone Tubby a try.

+1000,

Whatever speaker you decide on, be aware of the speakers sensitivity rating. A high rated speaker such as the Ragin' Cajun might push your PRRI volume into the over kill territory.

I agree that a speaker swap can make a big sonic improvement. I would check the idle bias on the output tubes before anything else though.
