I was talking to a friend that said if I wanted to purchase a 68 custom vibrolux reverb, why not spend a little more and get a twin or super reverb. Well I play mostly at home and small gigs, 100 to 200 hundred people. However I know most will recommend the 22 watt deluxe reverb, not my favorite. How does a super reverb sound at low volume, I have heard its good but gets better the louder you crank it, or a bassman, they both sound killer to my ears. Does anyone play these at home? Also have a chance to buy a supersonic 60 at a very good price, half of the new cost, but thing it would be way over kill. Need clean.

Look at the Hot Rod Deluxe, awesome cleans, deep mellow and round, the overdrive channel needs help, but the cleans are awesome. I have one and I am very pleased with it. Check it out at the music stores.

Desertbluesman, I will have to check them out. I haven't yet because the volume on some of the ones up to 2014 was really loud from 1 to 2, however I have heard that Fender has fixed this and is more gradual as you go up, but still gets loud fairly quick.

I used a Bassman 50 and a 2 X 12" cab back from about 1968 - 1976. My only pedals were a wah and a (rarely used) fuzz and we were not mic'ed back then. It would cover a small to modest sized bar or high school gym ... perhaps 100 to 200 people as you're talking about. But the disclaimer: my band was nowhere near as loud as typical rock bands of the era and we were very careful about volume creep during gigs. Equally, the drummer had a "play soft button" and he was very good at it.

Our sound was more Jazz and traditional blues than hard rock, and it worked in that context.

I use a 1969 not a reissue SFSR in my bedroom and it does not get passed 2.5 in volume most of the time, I have pulled V1 and use a 12ax7 as PI (V6) in order to get a little snarl out of it with this low volume I like my amp, My Strat volume will be around 7 to 8. Amp Treble 6 Mid 5.75 Bass 4 to 4.5 Reverb 1.75 to 2 Vibrato 2 to 3 when using it. When I do bring it up to volume 6 it really comes alive, I need to use ear protection then, as I am a sound engineer for the last 36 years and need my hearing to make a living
Good luck in choosing an amp, try lots of them before you settle

Thanks for the responses. Still not made up my mind. No one has a Bassman in stock near me. Have checked out the deluxe reverbs 65 and 68. Have played all the 68 line except the twin. They sound great and didn't get all the noise I have read about. Maybe they fixed that. The custom vibrolux is really nice, but was worried about headroom. Like the Bassman reissue sounds I have heard but does have some bad reviews, but then again if you search hard enough you can find bad on anything. Thanks all for the replies.

For your stated use, I would go with the Vibrolux. Both the Super Reverb and Bassman are great amps, but need to be a little louder to get into their tone zone. I own both a '65 Super Reverb and a '66 Bassman originals (not reissues) and they sound fine at low volumes, but as the volume goes up they really begin to cook.

For home and small gigs the Vibrolux is a fine choice and a bit more flexible amp.

FWIW
