Turned on my BJr., heard a low rumbling hum which lasted for about a second, then the red light went dark, there was silence, and no power was getting to the amp. After ruling out mains, and the power cord, I opened up the amp and found the F1 fuse (2 amps, 250 Volts) was fried. The F2 fuse was fine. There were no burns, discolouration, smell of smoke or other signs of electrical trauma so I figured the fuse could have come to the end of its life or there may have been a small power surge which sent it over the edge. I replaced the fuse and it was a case of copy/paste. Same procedure, same result: F1 fuse fried.

The amp is still under warranty so I will be taking it to a qualified Fender tech but was wondering if there is anything else I can try before doing so.

Thanks and Cheers!
BM

Taking to tech is best thing to do. Prolly shorted output tube or loss of bias.

Thanks for the reply, BMW2002Ti. Since my original post I've done some Googling and the general consensus points to the usual culprits. In this case the power tube(s). I'll replace them and post back. If it doesn't work then I'll have a set of spare tubes.

Cheers!

Update: This morning I replaced the power tubes with a set of matched GT-EL84 which appears to have resolved the issue.

The question now is what to do with the old power tubes. One or both may be bad. Is it worthwhile to do the swap game blowing fuses to find out? Would putting in a bad tube with a good one cause any damage to the good tube?

Cheers!

You say it's still under warranty? Send 'em back to Fender. They should last at least until the warranty runs out, if not it's freeby valves. Shouldn't have cost you anything. In fact, if you had given it to a Fender tech, it wouldn't have cost anything. Unless, of course, the tech or Fender themselves are so far away you have to post it to then, in which case that might cost more than a new valve.

Hi 19martin48 and welcome to the forum. I did say that the amp is still under warranty but I neglected to specify that the 90-day warranty on the tubes expired over two years ago. Sorry for the confusion.

Cheers!

Chuck those tubes in the dumpster. Best practice is to replace output tubes in pairs anyway, so even if one tube is good it's practically useless.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

That's what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation, shimmilou.

Cheers!
