Anyone feel this amp and speaker combo is too dark or muddy sounding with humbuckers? Looking for a grab and go amp, and like the sound of the C rex overall but can't find too many opinions on using the amp with HB's and afraid it may get muddy with a Les Paul when using od pedals. Play mainly classic rock, no heavy metal stuff. Appreciate any info.

Eminence's Texas Heat might provide a slightly brighter tone when driven by humbuckers.

I have a Cannabis Rex in my Hot Rod Deluxe. it is not dark so much as deep sounding, but the tone controls work and you have a full range of tonal options. It is a little deeper than other speakers, so it has a fuller rounder tone without that ice pick attack found in brighter speakers in the Blues Jr. In fact as soon as I come back from vacation next week I will pull the trigger on a C-Rex into one of my 1-12 open back cabs for my Egnater Tweaker 15 watt head. Either that or a new 10" speaker cab with an Eminence Lil Buddy 10" speaker. I am probably deciding on the C-Rex since I already have the 1-12 cab with a 30 year old possibly defective EVM 12 L in it. I say go for it the reviews are steller for that combination.

I put a C-Rex in my Bjr, and found that I needed some lower gain tubes to optimize the sound. The sound was good, but it was all crispy breakup and I couldn't clean it up very much by lowering the guitar volume. I put a 5751 in V1 and a 12AT7 in V3, and now I absolutely love the sounds I get from this amp and speaker combination, very controllable breakup using the guitar volume, and very responsive to pick attack, going easily from clean to breakup. Using the master and volume, I can dial in a variety of tones from very clean and clear, to great breakup. 8)

Thanks for the tube info. So would you say the amp sounds good with humbuckers and overdrive pedals in general, and isn't too dark or muddy? I really want one more for home practice at low volumes, but need it to be portable too.

Thought this might be a good reference to go with this post ...

It sounds wonderful with hum-buckers or single coils, adjusting the controls for either for best sound. Obviously the amp will be more distorted when pushing it with hum-buckers, but I wouldn't say dark or muddy, and the lower gain tubes will help in this respect. I don't use pedals anymore, I just don't care for the hassle, and I can get great sounds without them.

Experiment with different tubes. Some are brighter, some are darker, some have more complex harmonics, some will give you earlier breakup, some will be cleaner, etc, etc. For the 5751 I have had very good results with the JJ, which is one of the few JJ tubes that I really like. Everyone has their own preference in tubes, and different tubes each have their own subtle effect on tone, both preamp and output. Also, different combinations of preamp and output can produce interesting results. One brand of preamp tube might sound better with a different brand of output tube, and the possibilities are nearly endless.
