I got my Blues Jr in the mail the other day (finally!) and I love it, more than I thought I would. My guitar sounds great, and it works wonders for harmonica :D

I am getting a loud hum whenever I turn the reverb up on the amp, however, and it is directly proportional to the amount of reverb I add. At full, it gets rather loud. Is this normal? Could something be causing this to be more of an issue than usual, or is there a way to reduce this?

It was normal for mine. I had to install a billm audio mod to silence it. But then I had an original green board Blues jr from the mid 90s and that was something of a known problem.

Basic kit green board on this page ... http://billmaudio.com/wp/?page_id=65

You might try swapping the reverb cables to see if that helps. Only one of the cables is grounded.

Try to put the reverb tank away from the speaker magnet

I'm pretty sure that when I got the cables wrong when reassembling mine it simply didn't work at all. (Or maybe that was the "box of a thousand howling cats" moment. Don't remember for sure what caused that.)

I just swapped out the stock RCA cables in my Deluxe Reverb with a set of high quality RCA cables and the hiss is all but gone. I have to crank it to 10 before I can start to hear any type of hiss. I would agree, start with the cables first.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Did you put back you "olds" cable to listen now ? Just unplug an plug a new cable may clean the "dirty ' contact on rca plug and jack and it could work with the old ones.

Yes, I did. Long story but I actually had to replace the reverb tank due to broken spring latches and broken transformer wires when i first bought it. The old reverb tank looked like it had been kicked around slapped back in just for posterity. Believe it or not, I was able to negotiate the price down to <$450 due to that bad reverb tank. I explained to the seller that it aint much of a deluxe reverb without reverb.... That pawn shop didn't know what hit them. :D
Also, I was able to repair the original tank by hardwiring/soldering the input and output transformer leads to the connectors. It now sits in box as a spare/backup.

Thanks a lot, that turned out to be it. I decided to try that out very quickly before I went out to buy a multimeter and soldering materials. I can't believe it was that simple.

Wow, I can actually hear the reverb now; it's wonderful. :D

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Exactly what did you swap. Did you swap the entire cable for another or simply swap the connected terminals at each end?

I just switched the terminals. The red and black were just switched around.

I still love this amp, and the reverb. I might try switching out the tank, 'cause I hear you can get a much better one for around $20.

You can fit a 17" tank in that Blues Jr if you trim 1/4" off each end of the new tank.
For better tone, replace the reverb IC with a TLE2072 or a similar hi performance chip.
