Thanks Arjay, that's what I thought, just a better tube in overall quality.

Perhaps merely a *newer* tube. Their existence is finite (much like us who savor their dulcet tones).

Update on reverb tank, I finally found a USA Accutronics 4AB3C1C which is the correct tank for the stand alone reverb unit.I did the same test as I did when putting in the Gibbs and Hammond, ran cables out to test one tank then the other, as good as the G&H tank was the USA Accutronics was better, these tanks are almost impossibe to find, plenty of 4AB3C1B, but very few of the 4AB3C1C's.Image

I just had a TRRI come in with the same complaint, bump sensitivity.
With the memory of a vintage Super Reverb I just worked on, I realized a few differences in the reverb mounting between old and new Fenders as I was looking at this Twin.
First, the tank in the old one is mounted on a spacer strip to raise the springs another 1/4" away from the cardboard base. This one had grey marks on the cardboard where the springs have obviously been rubbing.
Second, the old tank bag is mounted on a couple wood blocks to raise it off the bottom of the amp. The new ones have the bag screwed to the bottom.
Let's see, What would Leo do?
So I cut a few spacers and mounted them in. What a difference!
I can rap on the tank itself and can get only a little response. No pounding on the case produced any ringing at all.
I cut down th length of the cardboard to 18 inches and the width by about 1/2 inch to accomodate the changes.

I glued the hardboard strips to the cardboard and screwed the tank to the hardboard and taped the tank to the cardboard to dampen it further.. I screwed the pine spacer blocks down without glue.
I mounted the blocks 18 3/4" apart. They need to have only 1/4" to 3/8" between the block and the cardboard to be able to suspend the bag above the bottom.
Put a spacer under the bag to lift it up before you screw it down to the bag. Then remove the spacer and check the bottom clearance..
The mounting screw needs to go through the top and bottom of the open end of the bag to properly suspend it.

This is a simple mod to do. The only trick is to ensure the reverb output jack on the tank is oriented to the opposite end from the power transformer.

Definitely NOT the way it was done during Leo's era.

You'll never see those wooden spacing blocks in a vintage Fender amp. NEVER.

Vintage tanks are always oriented with the in/out jacks facing the rear. ALWAYS.

Vintage tanks are always affixed to the cardboard pallet with four sheet-metal screws. ALWAYS.

Thus installed, vintage tanks never suffered from any "bump sensitivity". NEVER.

As an aside, the first blackface re-issue amps had their tanks installed in the same manner as the original amps and suffered none of the problems that are now occurring. I don't know WTF Fender is doing now (besides trying to save a nickel or a dime on each amp at the expense of reverb performance and customer satisfaction).

My56Strat...Angelas carries both the 4AB3C1B and 4AB3C1C tanks. Just for future reference should you need one.

Thanks for the info, but the 4AB3C1C I was looking for is the old USA made Accutronics tank, several companys offer a 4AB3C1C tank that is correct for a stand alone reverb tank, but they are all made over seas now(the new Acccutronics are made in Korea), and nothing like the original IMHO.

Our town attracts retirement residents who regularly leave behind old spinet organs that show up on Criagslist for little or nothing.
All these old Baldwins, Lowreys, and other American made pieces hide a vintage tank and speakers in them.

+1

And often a tasty selection of still-usable vintage tubes as well.

Tim, if you see a sale on a nice Leslie, say 21 or 30 watter, I would love to restore one of these. Anyone ever use a Fender Vibratone?

Thanks!

I owned and used a Vibratone years ago, Matt. It sounded good but saw only limited use and was just about as big as my Twin Reverb so after a year or so I unloaded it.

I modded a similar Fender Leslie a few years back. I put an AC/DC motor in it with a foot pedal mounted variac to vary the speed. It expanded the expressive effect quite a bit.
I ran into an interesting Leslie on a service call recently. It has a 4 channel 2 X 6BQ5 amp module in it and 2 Rotosonic drums.
The speakers are mounted in the rotating drums and spin faster than a Leslie. It was OK, but it's matching Hammond E model is in bad shape.
I wasn't willing to bury myself under that, so it went up on Clist and didn't sell for $350. As far as I know, its still in her living room.

Yeah, basically I love those old analog, kind Rube Goldberg contraptions that are now replaced by a 1/2-inch IC chip on a circuit board.

Kinda clumsy elegance.

:D
