A friend gave me a Fender Deluxe 90 as it had some issues, which are cutting in and out at higher volumes particularly on the higher gain/drive channel and when using drive button, red light fades from on to off in sync with cutting off. Anyone have an idea what this is caused by and if solution is relatively inexpensive, or should I toss it in the garbage (I may keep Celestian speaker).

It sounds like you have some broken solder in the low voltage power supply.
The large white rectangular resistors are the usual culprit, but for a reliable amp, its time for a general resolder job.

+1

That's where I'd start my troubleshooting efforts.

Thanks for replies and tips,

As I've got time to tinker and a soldering iron (and other amps), Ill start to dig in. Are electronic components for this amp still generally available if anything needs to replaced after trying re-soldering?

In the event I'm not able to get it working properly and end up using amp as only an extension speaker cabinet, is there a best way to test if speaker it is still good working order?

Cheers and thanks

Aside from a couple of op-amps for the overdrive and reverb functions (which may or may not still be available), most of the other components were standard off-the-shelf parts AFAIK. The DSP models are not so fortunate as several of their proprietary parts were discontinued years ago.

Great thanks, I've downloaded schematic seeing they were done 1999, otherwise opened up seems like all components and not "chips" but still might be a bit of a challenge to try and re-solder properly by hand.

Use caution working around those PCB's -- do not overheat the traces lest they de-bond from the substrate and fracture.
