Anyone have experience with the JJ 6V6 tubes in their HRDlx? How hot did you BIAS to hit the sweet spot......I only have a Multi-meter so I need the mV level as explained on the Eurotube web site. How about using different level JJ or other brand of pre-amp tubes to tone down or smooth out the harsh DRIVE and MORE DRIVE channels? How about WEBER or other speakers? My amp came with a Celestian 30......any thoughts? I play blues/rock style music. What do you ask for at the auto parts store when you ask for high temp tube rings. My local Auto Zone didn't have anything..........

I tried the JJ6v6's in a HRDlx, they rattled. I tried each one in a Champion 600, each rattled. I have one in a mid 70's champ it rattles less.

Plenty of preamp tubes out there, you'll probably have to try a few.

I have TAD6L6wgc's, biased at 70mv. TAD12ax7's in V1&2. JANPhillips5751 in V3

Good Luck

The Hot Rod Deluxe isn't made to run 6v6's. You can, but I don't really like the way it sounds. Check Eurotubes website they have a lot of information.

I got the 6V6 info FROM the Eurotubes site and even called them. They said it would sound pretty much the same but cut the watts down from 40 to about 30ish. You need to lower the bias for the 6v6's. I am shocked that the JJ tubes rattled. Maybe it's just the nature of the amp (HRDlx) due to the fact that the power tubes are so close to the speakers.
To the guy with the 5751's...........did this help the over compressed DRIVE and MORE DRIVE channels? Any one else with more input? I can only use the Drive channels when they are set VERY low. Any more and it sounds like crap. I want the Fender CLEAN and slightly overdrive......then a Marshall type sound when I need it to sing.......The guy at Eurotubes called what I am looking for.........The Holy Grail.
Thanks for your imput also Supro..........
What about speaker changes..........anyone?

Bob at Eurotubes can help you out. I use their Blues option "1. The tubes really tamed the drive channels. It git rid of the icepick in the forehead syndrome. It also has nice natural breakup. I play mostly blues so YMMV.

Tube dampers can help with the rattle. Almost every combo amp I've owned over the past 40 years developed a tube rattle at one time or another.

Bob also has a 6L6 that's supposed to be less prone to rattle.

WL, If you want Marshall tone, you'll need a Marshall or Marshall clone. The Hot Rod Deluxe can kind of do Blackface clean to some what Tweedy overdrive. It's tries to do a couple of Fender voices. I like this amp, but it can make some not so good sounds. Try to have it make the sounds you like and don't worry about the ones you don't like. Forum tube advice is like Forum speaker advice, very subjective to the player/listener. I'm sure JJ tubes makes some very nice tubes (I just haven't had the best of luck).

Good luck

I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue amp, which is quite similar to the Hot Rod Deluxe, and I just installed a pair of JJ 6v6s tubes using the advice from http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/. Before I go any further I should say I have no experience in the fields of electronics or amplifier repair. I know how to read, read the instructions for Biasing a HRDx at the aforementioned website, including the instructions concerning safety, so that's about the sum of it. I should also say I don't have a connoisseur's ear when it comes to tone.

The results: decreased are both the volume and overwhelming bass response. On the clean channel, when set at three, the volume is loud and the sound is slightly compressed (I think I did lose some compression in the clean channel). The drive channel is less muddy and perhaps still not the dirty sound I prefer, yet I've found I can recoup some of that lost compression by decreasing the drive on the drive channel and running the master volume at 2-3. It's loud, but not so loud the neighbors can hear it. Clean with a nice bite when the strings are struck hard. I'm experiencing no tube rattle, but perhaps the previous poster either received a bum set of tubes or his amp doesn't like the JJ's?? Also, I have a Digitech Hendrix pedal. Running it through the clean channel, with a volume setting of "2" using the "Purple Haze" setting creates a really excellent dirty sound. Fully saturated and rich. To return to the clean sound, the amp hasn't lost it's touch sensitivity when cranked a bit.

Oh, I probably lost some of the compression due to me biassing it cold: 30 mV. I tried it at 38 mV but decreased it in hopes of decreasing the thunderous sound these amps emit at a volume setting of "2.5." Again, my goal was to have a more manageable volume without losing tone. Tone has changed but not diminished in quality IMO. I checked the bias of the original tubes and discovered it to be 72 mV-- that's from the factory-- in case anyone was interested in knowing.

For the future I might change out the V1 and V3 tubes for lower power tubes, but only for the purposes of having a lower power amp. I haven't yet, but will eventually start using a TS-9. Perhaps even, I'll replace the speaker with a lower power speaker to make getting a nice dirty sound a bit easier.
