I know you said the features of the modeling amps overwhelm you, but the Fender Fuse software is really, really easy to use and is very simple to understand. It's graphics that look like the real amp! You can pick up a Mustang 1 for just over $100, or used for less. You obviously use a computer (you're posting on this forum). Watch some of the tutorials about the amp on youtube, or look through this forum for beginner advice on the Mustang (particularly Scott from UK on the Mustang forum). You'll be pleasantly amazed at the sounds you can get from that amp. I have both a Mustang 1 and a Super Champ X2. I couldn't be happier with the tone of those amps. Both sound great at living room volumes. And the Mustang will take headphones.

Speaking of modeling amps which are simple to use....I almost pulled the trigger on this one:

Still thinking about it as an alternative to my tube amps. Supposed to be really simply to dial in break up.

Having experienced the tube goodness of a valve amp I think you will be disappointed with a modeling amp. They might pretend but still don't capture the essence IMHO.

There are a lot of 5 Watt tube amps around with various reduction features.

I have a Bugera V5 which switches 5W to 1W to .1W. It is a nice amp out of the box (and very cheap - less than an attenuator) but after a speaker change and revalve it has become one of my favourite home amps.

I have Peavey modeling amp. I should never have gotten it. There is virtually no response to how hard I pick and it really does not sound much like a tube amp afterall. I was initially excited by all the cool effects -- but that quickly wore off. Now I just want a small tube amp with reverb. I will check out some other brands but like the Fender sound the best.

peace

I am able to dial in a tone that is clean when you pick lightly, and breaks up when you pick harder (ala Larry Carlton). I am able to do this with my Fender Mustang III modeling amp.

Maybe your trouble starts with a capital "P" and that stands for "Peavey".

Very funny Strings. You are probably right. The amp sucks.

Just get a Pignose. I've had mine since the early 70's and it not only still works, but I still use it as my porch weasel.

This guy used one.

I think OP was looking for a 1 Watt TUBE amp.

I still have my old Pignose, they're lots of fun (remember the wah wah trick?).

I also have one of these, it's fun to plug all my Boss pedals into it:

The wah wah trick was what little brothers were for. My little brother's in his fifty's now and I can still get him to open and close that door. It never gets old  A one watt tube amp with any headroom will still be rough to find.

So I originally started this thread because I I like my ht1r for higher gain sounds but can't get a nice clean sound. I figured Fender would be able to make a 1 watt amp to do that. Now that I understand about headroom I realize that I can't always get what I want. I think I am going to get a ht5r. Played through one today and got the clean sound I like and the higher game sound is pretty good at lower volumes. Sorry Fender.

Indeed so. Are there tubes around that can even produce such a thing?....Thinking about it, isn't there a 1 watt Marshall?

On the plus side, there are a great many 5 watters out there but even in triode mode they can be pretty loud.

Sr4815, I wish there were better news, but I'm afraid it's the nature of the beast. Marshall has a 1 watt amp that can be switched to .1 watt. It's about nine hundred bucks ans virtually no headroom. My Egnater Rebel 20 dials down to 1 watt but loses virtually all its headroom. With Attenuators, you still lose headroom. A one watt tube amp is still surprisingly loud but with no headroom. I like the sound and have a few amps less than 10 watts. Maybe a hybrid with a solid state power section and tube preamp section would work out.

Got that right John. I just finished an eight watt kit that sounds really good and is really loud through two 1x12 cabs. It actually even has a fair amount of headroom too and has a few neat features. I installed a headphone jack in it too. I had a chance to try a Marshall JTM1H and that was kind of loud, but hardly any headroom. I think the power tube is a ECC82 which I think is a 12AU7.

I like my Blackheart. Around the house I use one power tube and it puts out 7 watts. If I'm out playing with another guitar player, bass, and drums I can kick in the second power tube and get 15 watts for more headroom.

Vox also makes some nice headphones for guitar with built in effects. I use mine all the time when the kids are asleep. If home was the only place I played and always played alone, I could get by with just it.

You should be pretty happy with that, but if you would be interested in a high end amp w/Fender tone you could check out Victoria amps. There's a couple of 5 watt models. They're very pricey though.
