(Noob question, perhaps ... I'm asking for my brother and his DRRI, but this could apply to my CVR or just about any amp with a 1/4" speaker out that goes to the combo's speakers)

Let's say I wanted to use a different head (say, a lower-wattage head) with my existing combo's speakers. Could I simply remove the jack from the back panel and (assuming impedances are kosher) plug that into the other head, essentially making the DRRI into an extension cab for this other head? The DRRI wouldn't have to be turned on at all, since the other head would be powering the speakers.

Yes. Of course you can.

Just be sure of two things:

1) the combo being used as a cabinet is not powered up while the speaker is unplugged.
2) the combo speaker (or combination of speakers) has at least as much resistance as required by the output jack of the power amp head.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The stock speaker in a regular-production DRRI is the Jensen C12K rated for 100 watts. Thus, you can push that driver pretty hard without fear of damage.

As above and also, remember to plug the combo speaker back in as soon as you are done using it as an extension cab, so you don't forget and later try to use the combo with the speaker still disconnected.

+1000

I've had a few customers bring their amps to me with that "malfunction".

I would've felt guilty about charging them a service fee to plug their speakers back in so I never did. Their embarrassed grimace when told what the problem was was payment enough.

I live in a pretty small community and the cadre of musicians here is pretty tightly-knit. My clients learn of me primarily by word of mouth (I don't advertise) and I do what I can to legitimately save them money on gear maintenance and upgrades. I leave the gouging to the big-city turds.
