Just became aware of these 23 watt tubes.
Anybody tried them in a high plate v amp (Deville)?

I have JJ 5881s in a 50w Marshall JCM900. They work/sound fine.

The original 5881 (Tungsol) were ruggedized mil spec 6L6GB's. They were not designed to take plate voltages seen with 6L6GCs (+450VDC).

For that reason, I suspect that the JJ's aren't true 5881's.

It seems that many of the JJ tubes aren't quite like the number on their labels. The 6V6 is more like a 6L6, etc.

Correct -- that was the other example I had in mind.

It doesn't necessarily mean the JJ is a *bad* tube. Merely "different" than traditional operating characteristics indicate.

Yep, I've suspected that for a while. The proof for me is do JJ's sound good and are they reliable?
I've had a couple take a dump on me lately. The latest was an EL84 in my Marshall clone. It got all funky sounding and red plated. I swapped sockets and it red plated in the other socket too. I still checked the voltages anyway and everything was still in spec. I replaced them with The Tube Store's 7189 "Premium Series" great sounding tubes.
5881's have smaller plates which I'm no tube genius, but I guess that's why they can't handle the plate voltages, and break up a bit sooner than a 6L6. I'd be more concerned about smoking the tubes.

Yep. I'll just wait until more reviews are posted about these than risk smokin my amp.
I do USE JJ6L6's and 6V6's though with good results.....mainly because I presume they're one of the more robust tubes for high plate voltages.

According to the spec sheet, they can handle 500 VDC on the Plate (Pentode), which would confirm that they are not like a traditional 5881.

That's closer in spec to an STR 6L6GC!
