I recently replaced the stock power tubes in my Hot Rod Deville 212. I wanted a clean loud sound so I put the Groove Tube 6L6 R with a 10 rating. These tubes will only bias down to 72mv. Will running these tubes at that mv rating cause damage? Should I go back to the stock 4 to 7 ratings? What is the maximum bias setting and still be within a safe range?

By the way, I played a four hour show last night and the sound was very loud and clear. Just what I was looking for. I just don't want to have any premature failures running these tubes.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated !

Hi GRA,

That is actually a pretty good setting for the HRDvl.

With approx 485 VDC on the Plates, 72 mV at the test point equates to roughly 17 watts of idle for each tube, which puts the tubes at just under 60%. I would say that is right in the sweet spot for this amp and those tubes.

"...the sound was very loud and clear. Just what I was looking for."

Sounds like you are in great shape! :D

Thanks for the input. I have the same amp and even though my amp is only 6 months old and working fine, I may become a permanent member in a local surf band. and on some outdoor gigs at high volumes it started to break up, which was great but for this band I may retube and bias it for even cleaner. I am glad someone has done this.....I LOVE this amp. If i do this I will keep the old tubes in a super safe place in case i "Wanna Put It Back To New"

A big THANKS to shimmilou for the reply! Sounds like you've been way deeper into the electronics than I have in the HRD and have a good working knowledge if this amp.

Guido - I believe if you retube to the 8 to 10 rating you will be satisfied with your sound. I too play outside gigs from time to time and the stock tubes did break over way to soon for me too. If you buy the Groove Tubes they will come in a well packed box. I put my old tubes in this box and carry them as spares in the back of my amp. Be sure and replace then in pairs because they are performance matched from the factory.

More suggestions for cleaner sound and to smooth out the Drive channel a bit; try a 5751 in the V1 position, and a 12AT7 in the V3 (PI) position. This can be done instead of, or in conjunction with, output tube change. No worry about biasing with preamp tube changes, just plug and play.

Thanks for the tips. I never use the drive channel. For over 20 years I have played in oldies bands where I want a super clean sound. Everyone I know uses either Vintage Amps or the re-issue series. I like the Hot Rod models because in the type of band i am in and my circles of musician friends NO ONE in my area uses a Hot Rod Amp, so I am different than the other guys I know. And it gets the classic clean Fender Sound. This amp will get the sound of The Ventures in 1962 and the James Burton sound from the old Rick Nelson records. Thats what I was going for. I wanted more amp than a Deluxe but less than a Twin. My ideal would be a Pro-Reverb Amp. I wanted a new amp with a warranty and this fit the bill for power and 2 12 speakers
