Lost my power cord for my XD. Used one from my monitor to get me by, but it sounds like crap. Definitely need a better cord, but what about something better than the original (that doesn't cost that much)?

Suggestions appreciated!

Thanks!
Yes! An improperly spec'd power cord CAN cause output problems in an amp. Earlier this month, I had a LOUD humming noise amp issue coming from my newly purchased, just turned-on, Fender Pawn Shop Series Ramparte Amplifier! Both volume knobs were completely counter-clock-wise ("0" position), and my Epi wasn't even connected! I examined the power cord; it was tagged "10A MAX 125V-Made in China" - it may not have be within USA specifications. I connected the power cord from the Peavey Vypyr® VIP 1 amp that I was selling. The humming was still there. Hmmm. So... I went to Best Buy, and purchased (for $9.99 + Tax) an Insignia AC Power Cable. On the cordboard "hanger-thingie" that it comes on, it said that it's "made for desktop PC's and other AC powered devices". Once the new AC Cable connection was made... VOILA! The loud humming noise was GONE! THAT WAS TOO EASY! Just a barely audible, very, very, LOW hum can now be heard! My understanding from research, is that most (high-end) amplifiers have this type of just audible humming which usually goes away at some "sweet-spoy" higher-up on the dial. I left the Ramparte in the "ON" position for five (5) hours to "burn-in" the tubes, and also monitor the very low level hum. No change in status occurred. The amp ran great! No complaints...
Note that even though the made for Best Buy AC Cable I purchased is also "made in China", it appears that Best Buy verified that it was up to USA specifications - Wowser! imagine that...
For a purchase of just $9.99 + Tax, an Insignia AC Power Cable may just be what you need
If not, you can just return it for a full refund! Just hang onto the reciept, and DON'T tear-up the cordboard "hanger-thingie" that it comes on. Good Luck! Let me/us know if that helped!! 8)

You may want to check the soldering on the female IEC connector. The cord you bought may be keeping this connector from moving --- leading to bad contact or exposing a bad solder point.

More than likely, the power cord or connector was/is simply defective and had nothing to do with any "specs". This is the type of thinking that can start all kinds of stupid myths.

I can't say I've ever seen an amp's power cable cause any audible problems so long as it was of the correct rating for voltage/amperage and in good repair.

Considering how many power cables I've encountered as a computer technician, and I've never seen a single defective cord or connector, I'd say that's an extremely unlikely scenario.

Really? :? I have seen several that had either loose or missing ground pins, so it is not only possible, but it definitely happens, either by accident or sometimes on purpose.

I take it that you didn't read/comprehend the entire thread.

My response (to Gargoyleman) was about an amp that had hum, the power cord was changed and the hum was gone. The poster wrongly concluded that the new cord had better "specs" and that inferior "spec" cords cause hum. Considering that most IEC power cords are made in China, I say that it is unlikely that the "specs" had anything to do with the noise.

If this cord fits, I'm sure it will sound a lot better than one of those cheap cords.

Sigh. Loose or missing ground pins when they were brand new straight from the factory? Obviously wires can get damaged from use, that is not a manufacturer defect. I take it you don't comprehend what a defect is.

You've had two months to study this, and still didn't catch the fact that the replacement cord was used, borrowed from a monitor?

and you still haven't figured out that 'damaged' is different than 'defective'. Look the words up separately, they have different definitions.

Anyway, the point being that an IEC power cord is an IEC power cord, and none affect the sound at all, as long as they are not damaged or defective.
