I know you are thinking that this topic is impossible to intelligently discuss as it is so subjective. I don't care, unleash your subjectivity and tell me what to do. Whomever does it most convincingly will influence my purchase and get a gold star.

I like Jimi Hendrix/John Mayer type tones and err on the side of gently overdriven clean-ish tones. In fact, it is John Mayer covering Jimi in Bold as Love that I consider the epitome of great guitar tone.

Given that I'm not able to afford a Two Rock and am not related to a recently deceased rock legend that owned a Dumble and bequeathed it to me, That leaves me with fender amps to get me the closest to the tone I want.

I currently have an original Hot Rod Deluxe and only hate it about 58% of the time. I play mostly at home and at home volumes, which makes me think that the Princeton may be a good replacement, but to complicate matters further I went to Guitar Center last weekend and played both a Hot Rod Deluxe III and a '65 DRRI and the DRRI blew me away with the almost tangible in the air difference in its clean tone compared to the HRD, even at low volume. I felt like a rock star for the first time in my life and may have giggled on a few occasions. They didn't have a Princeton on hand to try and the employee said they usually order those, they don't ever get them in for the showroom floor. I have no way of knowing if a Princeton could cause similar giddiness.

THEN, complicating matters even more there is a '68 Custom of both the Princeton and the DR that I have to decide between!?!?!? This is borderline cruel! I like the look of the blackface more but the silver faces are cheaper and have some mods that people seem to really appreciate. Do you all think I would appreciate the mods given the example I have given for my golden standard of guitar tone?

Just make this decision for me, strangers, please. I'm trusting you. Thanks!

The DRRI is the one that can reasonably be expected to get you sonically to where you want to be while maintaining some level of reliability.

+1

The entire 68 Custom silverface line has been plagued with reverb problems since their release and the '65 Princeton Reverb re-issue has suffered from sporadic cabinet noise.

By contrast, the '65 DRRI has proven to be a generally rock-solid amp.

All of those would be good as long as they do not have a 6 or 8 in the title and Princeton.. 8)
My 65 DRRI is still going strong even though it has the robotic insides..

The "65 DRRI has my vote also. The "68 customs are tempting but there's been some issues with them. You'll want to demo them first & get the one you demo.

I have returned one 68 Fender Custom Twin Reverb and got another one and had to take it to the shop in three days.. The 65 DRRI has been much more reliable and sounds real good..

I voted '68 Princeton because I think they look cool and are designed to distort at lower volumes. I also just prefer the sound of the Princetons to that of the Deluxes. To my ears they sound a little sweeter and less bluesy/barking.

Having been down the same route I've tried a number of amps at home and I'm starting to think I like the sound of 10" speakers better for what I'm doing. 12's just seem to need a little more volume to get going, and feel a bit more ponderous. The Princeton has a nice sized cabinet around the 10" and does not seem small.

Lately I've been playing a 2 x 10" Princeton Chorus solid state amp and it has an amazing quickness and fullness to it at low volumes that I haven't been able to get with any other amp. It doesn't hurt that the stock speakers are pretty decent. I'm not saying you need one of these. If you have your heart set on tubes you probably should just get what you want.
