Hi, I bought a Blues Junior III a couple of week ago.
I have used it at home for now.
I found oud a little problem: lack of sustain!!!
Here's a sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts4BBooUJnE
Volume was around 4 and Master around 2.
Is this a normal behavior?

Sustain has a number of factors. One is amp volume. Higher amp volume will increase sustain, likely due to the sound pressure affecting the strings and the wood. Another is pickup height. As pickups are adjusted closer to the strings the pull of the magnets reduces sustain. Setup (action) can be a factor. Strings which are low to the fretboard have less room to vibrate and if low enough the frets can truncate a note, particularly during bends. Hands are a big factor. A light touch will produce notes with less sustain. Looking at your video I suspect your touch may be one of the issues at play there.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thank you for teaching me things I already know! Anyway..my fault!

I forgot to mention, I'm using this chain of effects:
CS3 > BK Butler Tube Driver > Delay

Also, with the same setup I have a lot more sustain using my Frontman 25R.
That's why I opened this thread!

Thank you everybody

Did you buy the amp new or second hand ?

Second hand ; weak tubes ?
Some amp work better with some pedal some not .

How is the sound ( sustain ) of both amps guitar plugged direct , no pedals ?

Not anyone's fault, but I don't think too many people here on the Fender forums have psychic premonitions about what you do and don't know.

I'm not sure what to say. I have great sustain with my BJr 111. It's had to tell from a video recording but the tone to me sounded bad. I would look into the tubes. But you already know that.

What's the sustain like without the pedals? Just as a baseline.

The BJ uses EL84 output tubes, right? Some makes and models of this tube have a nice warm midrange, but little headroom and sustain qualities. You will not get the warmth and headroom of a good 6V6GT.

The best EL84, IMHO, is the Reflector 6N14P-EV for both headroom and powerful tones. Must be the -EV or -EB. These are equivalent to old US made 7189 tubes. The Sovtek EL84M is a rebranded 6N14P-EV.

Ok thank you everybody.
The amp is new (not second hand).
Tomorrow I'll try to:
- compare direct plug in F25 and BJ
- compare 2 BJ III
Could be the tubes.
I'll let you know!

I thought that the Sovtek EL84M was a newly made tube, not rebranded, and although described as mil-spec, I didn't see anything about a 6N14P EV in the description...... :?: A great tube nonetheless, and more than fine for a BJr. Do you have any info that these started out as anything other than a newly made tube?

I have used the Sovtek, great tube, but it differs quite a bit in sound characteristics from this one that is a 6N14P EV from the start, relabeled by thetubestore. I have these in my BJr now, and I "preferred" them to the Sovteks. The Preferred series are much cleaner/glassier as compared to the Sovtek. I use the Sovteks in my MB TA for their "grind", and they are fantastic tubes that have held up well.

These are NOS 6N14P EV.

Maybe a bit confusing, but the original 1970-90's Sovtek EL84M were relabeled 6N14P-EB. The -EB was mil spec with the OTK stamp. -EV may or may not have the OTK stamp. Both are made to similar standards. Whether for military use or not. Sovtek re-labels a variety of these Russian made 7189's as "EL84M." OTK stamped ones are usually made for military use.

The -ER is rare and all were built to mil spec's.

Lifetime averages:

6P14P - 3000hr
6P14P-V - 1000hr
6P14P-EV - 5000hr
6P14P-ER - >10000hr
6P14P-K - 3000hr and tube is steady against vibration!!!! This tube is very rare.

Also tubes 6P14P-EV and 6P14P-EB is one type tube.

Your Blues Jr is OK. You're just comparing apples to oranges
The internal gain structure of the Frontman 25 is twice as hot as the Blues Jr III. . That is, if you set all the controls to center, the Frontman should be almost twice as loud. So, it has more sustain than the Jr will.
On the plus side, this gives you more clean headroom on an amp that has much less power than the Frontman
