Ok Thanks Captn, And no doubt it makes a huge difference. I am wondering if it will make such a difference with single coils though?

Well, I would think that single coils wouldn't be as hard on the stock speaker because the output is less, but I also think that the amp will sound better with an 8 no matter what you plug into it.
My two cents.

Your undoubtably right......Gotta get me a 8 ball!!! 8)

Just picked up a Champ 600 at the local pawn shop for $80! It looks brand new and even has the hang tag on it. Heck the feet on the bottom aren't even scuffed yet! I'm a HUGE fan of low watt tube amps - AC4 TV, Valve Jr, Crate V8, you name it but I have always wanted one of these - It's the amp I always plug into at GC when trying out a guitar off the wall. I love it!

At my house, if I don't plug straight in, I run through a Boss ME-70 multi effects pedal with all my amps - it's the only pedal I have. Anyway, I was just happily jammin away for an hour and a half experimenting and goofin around with this little Champ. I love it! I was not very fond of my Epi Valve Jr. until I modded it heavily, but this thing gets the juices flowin stone stock! I have three kids so my playing is mostly at low volume and this little guy is going to get a lot of attention from me!

Why? One to modify and one to keep stock. That's why! 8)

I wear one of those "medic alert" bracelets that reads:

Yes, la..lalike....c-c-ccraack....yeah. I have actually been thinning my heard a lot lately because it has been like an addiction, want to have 'em all! This one just got a Weber Sig 6 Alnico full ribbed, and I tried several different tubes. Quite a different sounding amp with different speaker and tubes.

Well, I added a 600 to my arsenal. I couldn't pass up the chance to pick on up on the "bay". So I've attached some pics and did a few replacements. First, I replaced the tubes, JJ 6v6gt and Chinese Gen9 12axt. Nice tone improvement over the tubes that came with it.
After reading several articles about the thickness of the grill cloth and how it muted the sound, I decided to remove it and try something that provided a little more breathability. I used a plain 100% cotton t-shirt and all I can say is wow, the speaker can breath now. I would recommend trying this first. Very cheap. very easy. and you might like it.
Lastely, since the amp didnt come with a rear cover, I made one myself. I used the basic design of the Gretch rear cover to allow for more air circulation and well as to allow the speaker volume to move out the rear side. So far so good, I'm liking it alot.
Overall, I am very happy with the amp as is and don't plan on doing anything else to it. If I get a chance, I will try to post some sound samples. Oh and one more thing, if you ever plan to replace the stock speaker with the Jensen Mod 6-15, read this article.
It cleared things up for me regarding the speaker swaps. I think that once the stock speaker breaks in, it actually sounds pretty good. (edit) Speaker till farts at higher volumes, past 9 on the volume knob on the high input jack using the neck pickup on my strat. Might consider Weber late breakup speaker or just using a 10" speaker cab I have.

Done quite a few beer addled blues hours on the 600 now and am starting to warm to it. You just have to think of it as a muddy lil thing. If you do its fun....Great dirty lil tones out of it. Its a cool lil amp as long as you dont expect good clean tones....It a warm lil thing....

I always dreamed of one day owning a thousand-dollar, made-in-the-PRC, 5-watt Champion Amp. Now I can contentedly start my dirt nap.
