Well, I added a 600 to my arsenal. I couldn't pass up the chance to pick on up on the "bay". So I've attached some pics and did a few replacements. First, I replaced the tubes, JJ 6v6gt and Chinese Gen9 12axt. Nice tone improvement over the tubes that came with it.
After reading several articles about the thickness of the grill cloth and how it muted the sound, I decided to remove it and try something that provided a little more breathability. I used a plain 100% cotton t-shirt and all I can say is wow, the speaker can breath now. I would recommend trying this first. Very cheap. very easy. and you might like it.
Lastely, since the amp didnt come with a rear cover, I made one myself. I used the basic design of the Gretch rear cover to allow for more air circulation and well as to allow the speaker volume to move out the rear side. So far so good, I'm liking it alot.
Overall, I am very happy with the amp as is and don't plan on doing anything else to it. If I get a chance, I will try to post some sound samples. Oh and one more thing, if you ever plan to replace the stock speaker with the Jensen Mod 6-15, read this article.
It cleared things up for me regarding the speaker swaps. I think that once the stock speaker breaks in, it actually sounds pretty good. (edit) Speaker till farts at higher volumes, past 9 on the volume knob on the high input jack using the neck pickup on my strat. Might consider Weber late breakup speaker or just using a 10" speaker cab I have.

Love my Champ... sounds fantastic with my Fender Strat, Gibson 335, and my newest acquisition a Peavey T-27 Limited...

I use my old Princeton Chorus for gigs where were playing unmiked... but the Champ sounds fantastic close miked....

OTOH getting used to the complex controls had it's learning curve<VBG>

Hello, just joined the forum. I am a huge C600 fan. I've had mine for over a year now. I replaced the power tube with a Tung-Sol. Big improvement over the chinese no name power tube. Recently I found an OLD Silvertone 12AX7 in a console stereo and it was a lot smoother and sweeter sounding than the original Sovtek.
Then, I pulled the speaker baffle out and ripped off that thick, sound dampening felt. Took the original baffle and carefully cut the hole out to almost eight inches. I bought a Weber 8in ribbed cone alnico speaker and was actually able to center it inside the cab. It is a very tight fit but looks like a factory job. I re-covered the baffle with burlap. I've got pics, will post later.
That 8in made all the difference with that amp. I play a Epi LP Classic with a Bad Monkey, MXR Micro Flanger, Holy Grail Nano and a Hardwire Delay. This amp loves every effect I put into it and with the speaker upgrade it can handle lots of volume and gain. My friends are always asking me to turn it down. Next I'm hoping for a 1x12 cab.

Anyway, I was looking for a c600 forum and found ya'll. Glad I did.

Sounds like righteous mods to me, Cap'n.

Welcome to the forum!

At the moment it is my only amp and I love it. Looking for a good OD pedal to put in front.

Also thinking of purchasing a VOX AC4 as a counter part to the Champ.

i don't need more than 5 watts for my solo basement performances.

fulltone OCD

yea, after research that looks like the one.

Has anyone changed the grill cloth on their Champ and how much of a difference did it make? and how difficult was it?

The guys over at Gretsch-talk.com seem to love it, once they change the grill cloth to oxblood or some other cloth that does not block the sound. But then, it won't look like the original...

Love mine the way it is but am considering a change in grill cloth.

If that 8 had been ANY bigger it would have never fit. Sounds real good.

Joined the 600 owners group on Friday. I wish i paid 99 like you guys over in US i paid $340. And that was cheap for one here. I dig the gritty sounds it puts out but i am not too impressed with the clean sounds so far, I need to do more time on it before it's broken in so to speak. I will see what i think in the coming weeks. It's a muddy little amp i am getting from it so far. And it's a nice muddy tone. But do they sound better clean after break in? How many hours would you say is break in for the speaker?

Hi Cap'n Greenfog,

Nice mod! I used burlap too, good choice. Can you get the output tube out? It looks very close to the speaker magnet. I put the Weber Sig 6 in mine, and an EH or the stock Chinese tube would fit, but had to move the speaker over to be able to get the bigger tubes like the JJ in and still clear the speaker magnet.

When I went to buy mine at the local music store, the price tag said $269. I found it in Musician's friend for $150. The local store matched that price for me and I got it $165 after tax. Now, like you say, they can be had for $99. Oh well, bottom line- I love it.

I agree that it's muddy, although not as dark as the Valve Junior I once had. As far as the sp break-in is concerned, I have no idea. I blew mine the night I bought it. For my purposes, the amp is useless with a 6in speaker, ONLY because it sounds best when you push the little guy to the breaking point. I'm not that impressed with the clean sounds either. However, with a Bad Monkey or Tube Screamer and delay to "open" it up, I can peel paint off the walls (well.......y'know). The problem is the 6in can't take near what the amp can dish out. The 8 can. I really want a 1x12 cab. The sp output is 4 ohm. Weber makes a good line of $50-$100 speakers https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/ and even advertises their Signature series AlNiCo 6 in as a replacement for the C600.

Anyway, I know that's not exactly what you were asking, but I just want to stress the fact that despite what some folks think, this amp is not necessarily a toy. IF you've got a decent component at the end of your signal chain. The factory sp is a smooth cone- early breakup. If you turn it up, it farts out. I just wasn't impressed.

I like your burlap better. To answer your question, no. I have to pull the chassis to get the 6v6 out. it looks like it's touching the magnet, but I can slide a sheet of notebook paper in, so they're not touching. Same with the transformer. It looks like it is touching the sp frame, but it clears. I could never fit a JJ in there, but the tung-sol seems to fit the bill.

Thanks for the response Capt, Yeah i don't know if i can live with it the way it is. I have some serious modding to do to get right with this little mudbox....

love mine.
in rooms with hard floors and my strat, sounds so sweet.
it breaks up so nice~
i changed to a JJ6v6 and a EH12ax7
and the speaker is good and broken in

the JJ seemed to give it a lil more headroom, and now the breakup is sweeter and smoother, seems

now i have it, my supersonic 22, and my big twin
I love carrying the first 2, my back is now so HAPPY!!

When I replaced the tubes, I noticed a distinct improvement. The speaker was the big thing, though. Here's the conclusion I've come to. The amp sounds good in the store with the stock speaker at reasonable volumes. I read that the advantage of a ceramic magnet, smooth cone early break-up speaker is that they sound good and warm at lower volumes but "fart out" at higher volumes. If your purpose for the amp is to practice in your room and not bother the spouse or neighbors, then the stock speaker is not only fine but probably preferable. If you find yourself constantly wanting to push the amp as hard as you can because you want more of that good Fender tube tone, then the stock "specially designed Fender speaker" quickly becomes garbage. I went with the AlNiCo 8in Weber signature series fully ribbed cone late break-up because- 1 the 8in has a much better bass response, 2 the AlNiCo magnet is said to be smoother and more compressed at higher volumes and 3 the ribbed cone makes the speaker very clear at high volumes. Seriously, I can turn this amp up to ten and crank the level on my Bad Monkey and it sounds like an almost exact scaled down replication of my friend's Hotrod and Maxon od808 Tubescreamer. Yes I could get even better sounds out of a 1x12 cab, but I enjoy the portability factor and the 8 is a nice trade-off. TDPRI has a 13 page (if memory serve's) thread all about modifying this amp. Most folks eventually put all their circuit mods back to stock and decided that the speaker I bought was the best mod. Actually, I bought it based on their findings.
All of this is subjective and depends on your circumstances and the kind of music you play and like AND the whole humbucker/single coil factor. I personally like that 5 watt "You're gonna melt the circuits" tube sound. I have to admit the clean sound is still not perfect for me, but I suspect that's more because the cheap Chinese electronics in my LP. That's my next scheduled mod. It never ends. GAS sucks when you're poor!

Ok Thanks Captn, And no doubt it makes a huge difference. I am wondering if it will make such a difference with single coils though?

Well, I would think that single coils wouldn't be as hard on the stock speaker because the output is less, but I also think that the amp will sound better with an 8 no matter what you plug into it.
My two cents.
