I hear that shoes and jewelry work well.

Easy!

You just take her out to the garage, open the car's trunk, and show it to her.

(it's always easier to apologize for unrestrained profligacy than to ask for permission beforehand to commit same).

I just got a Champion 600 yesterday off of Craigslist. The guy had bought it for his girlfriend for Christmas - she played maybe three times and decided she didn't like it. It is absolute in Out-of-the-Box condition. I got it for a fire sale price.

I had been very unimpressed with the one(s) I had played at a local shop, but this one sounds great. Low gain sounds like it has a wet blanket on it. (I need to try some humbuckers through the low channel). But it can bark on the High channel.

If figured for the price I paid, it would be a great office or bedroom amp. Something small I can grab-n-go.

I've ordered a set of JJ's for it (sorry Retroverbial - I cheaped out on the NOS 12AX7  ) and I am changing out the grill cloth. I am holding off on the speaker mod for now. I want to see what good tubes and a proper grill cloth will do for this little beast.

He should have gotten a new girlfriend and kept the amp.

Update on mine.....Tung Sol 6V6GT and a prefered series 7025 12AX7 tubes give a bit more head room, 8 inch Alnico Vintage Chicago Goes in this week still working out best spot for speaker so that the bottles of any shape can get in....Will post pics once its fitted.... Hoping for later break up again then this will be a gold little toy. It's nice for raunchy stuff now but not enough headroom with the 6 Inch.... Crossing my fingers the 8 turns this into the ultimate low DB blues machine!!!!

The stock grill cloth is pretty thick. I compare it to a baby's blanket sleeper. Thick and padded. I think something lighter will allow the speaker to push air better and should improve the sound (and volume) of the speaker. It seems to be a popular mod to make to these amps.

I ordered some grill cloth from Antique Electronic Supply. The stuff I ordered is actually listed for Philco Radios from the 1930's. I thought the color/texture would be complementary to the retro vibe of the amp.

I bought the amp with the intention of modding the grill cloth and the tubes...... I might do the speaker at a later date.

No sweat, PF. The JJ's are pretty good glass too.

I love my little champ and have made no modifications to it yet. There is a slight rattling I hear as I push it past about 8 or 9 and I am not sure where exactly it comes from as I am no expert with amps. I have honestly just ignored it but if anyone out there can help me out I would appreciate it :) I plan on getting a ts 9 to run through it soon with my tele. I originally bought it because it reminds me of my favorite album which is Layla and other assorted love songs by Derek and the dominos. Maybe in the future I will own a strat to play through it but until then its just me, my tele, and my champ.

NPD! Got a new pedal this week. The Champ loves it like Wild Turkey. Amazing how well this babie cooperates with pedals.

Here's my Champion 600 with the new grill cloth. Brown with a diamond weave - for 1930's Philco radios. I thought the weave and color was more suiting to the retro vibe of the amp. It's really close in color to the brown on the amp. The lighter fabric certainly opens the sound of the amp up. :D

I also pulled the tubes and installed a JJ 12AX7 and a JJ 6v6 - sorta..... after reinstalling the chassis I didn't get any sound. So I took it to my amp tech. Bad resister/flaky power switch. And I think user error effed up the JJ 6v6  . BTW - I attached a photo of the chinese 6V6 - you can see they use a black glass on the tube. Not sure why? Shielding?

Anyway..... I go get the amp at C'ville Music (the drop point for my amp tech) and I need to order a JJ 6V6. Tim, the Owner, says.... "Hey - you don't need to buy a new JJ, here have one of these." He pulls out a small plastic bucket of used vintage 6V6's..... we pop in a clean - new looking - RCA 6V6. WOW. Price....... free. "Thanks for coming into the shop"

The amp sounds fantastic. Right now it sits here in the studio with me. My American Special Tele plugged in and ready to go. :D

Now that is very cool! BTW, I really like the look of the new grill cloth. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it?

Thanks,
Jim

You can find a nice selection of grill cloth types on Ebay or at any number of amp-parts suppliers such as The Parts Guru, Mojotone, Antique Electronic Supply, etc.

Just as Retroverbial suggested - I got the grill cloth from Antique Electronic Supply. I was VERY happy with the service and the packing they did of my order. I think it arrived in less than three business days. (I'm in Ohio... they are in Arizona)

Here's the grille cloth I used. Its darker than the image of the website. Look under Antique Radio on the Grill cloth, Tolex, and Piping page.

This was my first go at doing any sort of "mod" on an amp. I learned a few things and I am encouraged to try a few more things in the future.

Great! Thanks to you both.
