I figured I should start a Champion 600 users' club to see if anyone else really enjoys this amp as much as I do. Anyone?

Hello Hottrod,

I'm in the users club but
not the owners club

I like it, a very fun Amp.

I'd like to see the vinyl treatment
change color from time to time.
Or, I presume, many would like
a laquered tweed option.

Cheers.

i have one of those little gems...

although i love the amp...(i do)
its just a bit thin for me...i am looking into getting the mercury magnetics kit ($250) but want to do some more research first...so far people are telling me that changing the tubes and the speaker for a weber 6" has amazing effects!

might try that too!

we'll see

I plan on dropping in a JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tube and a Tung-Sol 6V6GT power tube in it. As for the speaker change, stock is better in my opinion. But to each is his own I guess. Anyways it's a great little amp.

I, too love my little 600! I picked me up one this morning. I don't understand why almost every review online has to talk about modding it. I think it sounds perfect stock. And I like how easy it is to get great sounds out of it.
Is the jewel light really and LED? and have any of you used an extention cab with it?

I was at a music store over the weekend and tried out a guitar on one. I didn't get the guitar but loved the little amp. I just placed an order for one online and look forward to more playing.

I couldn't agree more. I am still shocked at how much bass the little thing pumps out. It even makes my small effects chain sound better.

What effects do you put through it that sound good?

I read a lot of reviews where people are not liking effects through it.

I played this and a Blues Junior. And while I liked the Blues Junior, I have a Traynor 40w that gets bluesey enough for me. I wanted a smaller amp to crank for recording. (It's on the way!)

BTW, I HAVE JJ's I can pinch (out of my tube upgraded Traynor) so I can see if it sounds "better". To tell the truth, the JJ's in my Traynor didn't seem to make a difference. But YouTube demo's sound on this amp like they do.

YouTube reviews showing the upgrades have the original sounding bright or as some say "thin", which to me is vintage Fender amp, and the mods make it deeper and grittier (more ballsy) and louder, but then again, isn't that NOT the point of this amp? Isn't it supposed to be retro and not so loud?

If you're going to buy this for 200, upgrade it for 250, why not get the Junior? At least there you get a few knobs and reverb?

This amp has plenty of bass for home use (as said, surprisingly thumpy for it's size) and recording me thinks. Let you know when I do record it tho.

Currently I'm just looking for inspiration that doesn't hurt my ear.

Why not build a 5F1 Tweed Clone kit for $150 more. Why sink $250 into a $150 amp?

It's a simple circuit.

I love mine!!!!! I dropped in some Tung-Sol tubes and put in the Jensen mod speaker and what a difference. Great little amp for the price (even with the mods). Good tone when on full volume....amp and guitar.

This is a decent sounding little amp as is, and can be easily modified to be even better. I really liked the stock sound, especially with a Tele, and played it exclusively for a few weeks. The "High" input sounded too distorted so I stuck with the "Low" input. And yes, it is really an LED under the light cover, but you can't tell by looking at it.

I didn't care for the Chinese output tube 6V6GC, and I had an old 5881/6L6WGC Sovtek tube handy so I thought I would try it. The sound was clearer and richer with the 6L6, and the breakup is much better and smoother. The 6L6 will run hotter because of more filament current draw, but the amp seems to handle it well and I believe that the transformer in the amp is rated high enough for the extra current draw. It is possible that the extra current draw/heat may shorten the life of the amp, so I might switch back to a 6V6, but better than the one that came with the amp.

While I had the 6L6 tube installed I hooked the amp to an external 12 inch 8-ohm speaker in a Deluxe cabinet and WOW! The amp was a lot louder and sounded even better. I was able to really push the amp using the "High" input and the sound was great, but I still like the "Low" input sound better. It really sounds like an old Deluxe amp when plugged into the external speaker, with excellent breakup and great clean tones as well.

Overall the Champion 600 has a good sound, is versatile, can be used with external speaker and is easily modified. I got mine new at GC for $99 and for that price this amp will be hard to beat. :D

Lovely amps , I agree, I love mine.
My question here is about your Gretsch, I am interested in purchasing one, probably from the Electromatic range, 6120, have you any advise or experienced of these guitars?

Thank you
