I know I've read about this before but a search hasn't turned up anything. My 65 DRRI pops when I turn the standby switch to off after I've used the amp. If I remember correctly, it really isn't hurting anything, it's just annoying. Easiest solution is to turn down the volume before I turn off the amp.

So, what's the deal....why does it happen and does it hurt anything by popping? Any cure other than turn down the volume? None of my other amps.....65 PRRI, 63 VVRI, EC Tremolux... pop when I turn them off.

Correct. It is normal for this amp. The only suggestion is to not use the standby switch, leave it in play and just use the power switch to turn the amp on and off, and no more popping noise.

Should the tubes warm up before working?Should the amp cool down in the standby mode for a short while before killing the power? I 'm kinda unsure about this. Can you explain?

That was my original thinking, use the standby to warm up first, then when powering off, use the standby first before the power switch.

However, for this particular amp (DRRI), Lightning MN suggested simply leaving the standby switch in play and just use the power switch to turn the amp on and off. After thinking about this, it does make sense, since the amp is tube rectified, and the rectifier tube takes a few seconds to bring the B+ up slowly, so it doesn't have the same need for the use of the standby as there is with a solid state rectified amp.

For my DRRI combo, I have been leaving the standby switch in play and just using the power switch for on and off, and no more popping, and so far no other issues (time will tell).

Oddly enough, the head version that I just got will give me that pop whether I use the standby switch or leave the standby in play and just use the power switch. :? I have heard others that have the same thing with their combo. This definitely needs further investigation. The pop is annoying, but hopefully nothing more. :|

All amps made by Leo himself use tubes rectifier and Leo put standby switch.
Leo don't want to spend money on part if it don't need but he want to build the best amps.

There is also technical reason to me ; tube rectifier is slower than solid state but not enough to do the best warmup .
Will we see any difference in tubes life ?

Time will tell. :?:

Of course I will immediately blame Lightnin MN if there is any damage, no matter the cause.
