I purchased this amp new three years ago and use it on a regular basis in my 3 amp rotation. I really like this amp and not only for its good looks with its beautiful tweed covering and great sound, but because it has been an absolute workhorse with zero issues.

However, I did discover shortly after I purchased it, that the stock speaker was not very good once the volume came up. I quickly replaced the stock eminence speaker with a Jensen C12k 100 watt speaker. I also swapped out two of the three preamp tubes for lower gain values which rendered me better volume control and a smoother creamier sound that is warm and fat..at least to my ears.
This amp takes pedals exceedingly well and is great for playing at home with a manageable volume level and is certainly loud enough for gigging out.

I will have to say that the Hot Rod deluxe 3 is a better value out the door since it comes with an upgraded Celestion speaker and the Blues deluxe comes with a less than desirable speaker.

Yes, the BDlx is a sweet amp. I take it that you use my favorite tube lineup, 5751 in V1, 12AX7 in V2 and a 12AT7 in V3?

The stock speaker is just a good overall speaker, nothing spectacular but good. The same Eminence speaker that I have used in my HRDlx for some 16 years.....I just changed it for an Eminence Swamp Thang, and it is louder (more efficient), cleaner, and the drive channel is even a bit better. I also put the ST in the matching 1x12 cab, and the pair sounds great.

I imagine that you get some earlier breakup with the Jensen as compared to the stock Eminence?

Thanks for chiming in...

12ay7 in V1 with the others being just as you described. Choosing the Jensen speaker came after I played through a George Benson Hot Rod Deluxe and absolutely loved that speaker. I also now use this speaker in my Deville 212. As for breaking up early, not really at all...it holds together very well all the way up the volume dial for the most part and that works very well for me. I get excellent gain/drive via my multi effects pedal and the amp handles it very well...even at low volumes it sounds great for just rehearsing in the house. I can see why these amps are so popular especially for those who are open to speaker changes like changing strings on a guitar for one's personal preference of manufacture and string
gauge.
