BB, I set it back up and tried waiting 15 seconds and no pop so I told Sweetwater to hold off a few days on the RA. I only have EVM12L's in open back extension cabs. I am trying to sell the speakers without the cabs and use Cannabis-Rex speakers in the cabs..

So I played the amp for a few minutes, nice tone, a little chime-ee for my taste but a little tone control adjustment on the guitar fixes that. I turn the power off wait 10 seconds play a chord to discharge the caps the rest of the way and no popping.

According to the guys on the Gear Page the glue is there to keep us peasants from meddling with the BIAS. They say to pick it off with a dentists pick, and it works like any other BIAS pot adjustment. After a few weeks I will pull the trigger on some JJ tubes, gold plated for the pre amp tubes, with a balanced one for the phase inverter, and some mid headroom 6V6's, and some of their BIAS probes which I have been wanting for some years, now is the time to pull the trigger on them as well. I will BIAS it a little hot which warms up the amp a bit. At least it did that for my Hot Rod Deluxe.

Double check the stock tubes, mine came with JJ made GT output tubes. It would be a shame to get replacement tubes that are the same as what you already have. JJ 6V6 are bigger than most any other 6V6, with a rounded top, they look and sound more like a 6L6.

I changed my output tubes from the JJ made GTs to EH GTs, and the bias pot adjusted just fine without scraping/picking anything. Many bias adjust pots have some kind of seal/glue on them, mainly as a tell if it has been moved, not to try and lock it into place.

I am also turning off the amp without using the standby (just keep the standby switch in play all the time), as suggested by Lightning, and so-far, so-good, no popping and no issues.

Hey shimmilou
What is your take on these heads ?
My guess is the JJ's are why people comment on the tight low end or at least they contribute compared to other recent manufacture tubes, the jj's seem to have 6L6 attributes.
Not tube rectified and so I can't imagine not using the standby is a great idea.

shimmilou I tried the turn the amp off with the standby switch on and it popped like it did with the switch off. I guess I have to go on and do it like above turn the standby switch off wait a few seconds play a chord and then off....

Yes, it is tube rectified. After thinking about what Lightning suggested, it made sense that since it is tube rectified, not using the standby switch would be OK. I agree that the JJ 6V6 does sound more like a 6L6, that's why I changed mine to EH, I wanted a more traditional 6V6 sound from this amp, the sound for which the amp is famous. I already have amps with 6L6/5881, and I didn't want a DRRI to sound the same. The stock Jensen in the DRRI sounds wonderful with the EH, and I didn't care for the sound as much with the JJ.

I am waiting for Sweetwater to get the Am Std HH Strat in Olympic White in stock, and I'll order that and probably the DR head with it. :D I might leave the JJ made GTs in the head to have a different sound than my combo.....or I might try a different set of 6V6 depending on how it pairs with various cabinets. :?:

DB,
I have been leaving the standby switch in play and just turning the amp on and off with only the power switch and I have no popping. Maybe you should wait a minute after playing before turning off. :?

Hey shimmilou
I was referring to the TSA-15H tube screamer head by Ibanez not being Tube rectified.
seems as if we got our wires crossed

I have a sweet Mullard GZ34 in my DRRI 8)

Oh, sorry.

I have not even seen the Ibanez head, so I have no clue there.

Are you saying that you get the popping noise when using the power switch? I haven't heard anyone say that so far, it is always the standby switch that gives a pop when switched to standby. :?

Yep it is the power switch. My workaround is to turn off the standby switch play a chord until the power in the amp discharges, then the power switch, or wait 15 seconds till the amp discharges the off the power switch. No pop at that time.

Well then, you're in good shape, use the standby switch as normal. I have heard of some of these amps with no popping when using the standby. I wonder what is different. :?:

A busted cap/capicator should to be replaced. It's supposed to store energy not release it through a break.

No, the caps will discharge normally through the tubes when the standby switch is opened. It is the same with all tube amps, so it's not clear why the DRRI makes the popping sound, but almost all of them do it, including the originals.
