So I just bought that 70's Silver face for $650.00. I think that is a pretty good deal going by from what I have been seeing on the net. I feel pretty good about it..

Yep flamed out, let the holy smoke out or demonic smoke...

I will post some pictures and give a description in the Vintage Amp Forums when I get it. The seller confirmed it was a Jackson Browne stage amp, so that is some extra mojo. Jackson Browne is one of my favorite songwriters and having this thing sitting in my studio is going to be pretty cool. 8)

Congratulations!

There are a couple of distinctly different permutations of a silverface Fender TR -- post some pics up and let's take a look at what you've got.

+1 MB. I owned a 76 100 watt Twin with a push pull master volume. As long as I left the master volume on 10 and not pull the boost, it sounded incredible. I owned and gigged that amp for for over 30 years with zero problems. All I ever did was recap it after 30 years and replaced the power tubes once and maybe a preamp tube or two. I only sold it because I don't do big gigs anymore and it was too heavy and too loud for most of the stuff I do now. I seriously miss that amp. Personally, I wouldn't give two cents for any current production Fender amp. I played almost nothing but Fender amps since 1966 and never had a problem with any of them. When I bought my Bandmaster in 1974, I gigged with it that night. Didn't even take it out of my car till the gig. The tags were still on it. I tried it in the store and that was it. Now, it's seems like Russian Roulette, serious hot or miss and it shouldn't be that way. It's sad.

The folks at Fender in Arizona have been more than nice in trying to get me a good amp. I have lost faith in the new ones though. Wrapping a good looking cab around crap electronics is no way to cater to your customers. Especially when you are charging your customers $1300.00 for it.. I will probably never buy another fender amp later than the 1970's..

I have a 1990's Blues Deville, 2000's Blues Deluxe, 2000's DRRI and if anything craps out in them after warranty, I will probably be kit bound before I spend anything on repairing the innards..

That's exactly what I did. I built three so far and a tube reverb unit too. You can pick up a 70's Master Volume Twin for $700-900 depending on the condition many times recapped too. Those amps are still real workhorses. If you look inside a new Fender amp it would make you sick to see all the cheap components and production shortcuts. Especially when you're laying down some decent cash. I built clones of a 5e3, Marshall 1974x and a little 5 watter. I thinking of build a Supro Model 24 too just to really round things out. I gig with the 5e3 and 1974x and Im really happy. I modded the Marshall clone so I can switch to a solid state rectifier so it's more like a Marshall 2061x 20 watt amp. It's am awesome rig.

Nice kits. Fifty watts is a little too much muscle for me. I just play in smaller pubs now. The biggest one seats around 150 or so people. It's more about the fun now. I'm so addicted to building these things. I just take my time and find any mistakes before I even fire it up. So far I've had nothing but outstanding luck.

We've certain come "full circle", Robert.

I can remember when, as kids, we'd ostracize and pooh-pooh anybody playing a "home-made" amp. Doubly so with anyone owning a guitar that didn't come from one of the brand-name companies.

Arjay, I got laughed at when I had my Bandmaster and my Vibrolux Reverb. Everybody else had Marshall's, Ampegs, Vox. That's one of the reasons I got the Sunn Scepter. Boy have times changed.

Well I just got the 68 Custom Twin Reverb back from the shop. I have to admit, it sounds like it just might be usable now.

Here is the list of repairs. Resoldered V7-10. Burnished Fuse Clips. Deoxit tube sockets. Replaced Power Tubes and Biased.

Just got through working it out for an hour and I am liking it.. Not as much hiss and it hisses less when it is over 6 on the volume. Plugged the guitar into the custom channel. Cranked it up to 8 and clamped it down a bit with a 100 watt Weber mass lite and it sounds real good clean.

Bumped it back down to 6 and hooked up an EH Soul Preacher compressor, Plimsoul and a Hardwire CM2 Tube Overdrive. Jumped my Zoom G5 from the input 2 on the custom side to the input of the Zoom and back into the Vintage input 1 on the amp from the output of the Zoom. The reverb does not hum anymore and no loud click when I hit the Vibrato pedal..

Very low noise with all of that hooked up, the delays were nice from the Zoom and the dirt pedals have some good grit and sustain.

I am picking up the 1972 Silverface Twin Reverb this weekend, so I will A/B them and check the differences...

Now I just need to find me a big barn where I can crank both of these Twin Reverbs up in stereo..

Hell yeah!

Regarding the '68 Custom Twin Reverb noise issue(s)

If you want to lower the noise floor hiss, a simple fix is to change V4 tube (4th from the right looking at the back) from the stock 12AX7 to a 12AY7 low gain tube.

They say this will change the characteristic of the amp, as it is meant to be a high gain amp, though going with a lower gain tube on the reverb output, we find that it simply lowers the amount of overall reverb, yet usually you would only have your reverb at 2 or 3; with a 12AY7 you may want to turn your reverb to 3 or 4.

Have fun
