This problem only occurs when I plug my pedal board in to my super champ x2, or even just my fuzz or distortion pedals - everything is fine for about 30 seconds, then there is this loud static, like a radio with no reception. I turn off the amp, turn it back on, and it's gone, until I play with the pedals, then it happens again after 20-30 seconds. This has never happened with out at least one pedal in line. Just guitar straight in, and its fine.

What is also interesting, is that if I unplug the input jack from the pedals to the amp while it is making this noise, it stops, then starts again if I plug the pedals back in, like it's coming from the pedalboard. But I use this pedal board thru other amps all the time and never have this problem. It always stops if I turn the amp off then back on again, like its resetting.

What on earth is happening here?

Thanks for your input.

Hi bongo fury,

It could be your preamp/PI tube. You could try substitution of a known good 12AX7 to see if that gets rid of the noise.

I'll definitely give it a try, but seems weird considering the circumstances under which it occurs, doesn't it? Have you ever heard of something like that happening only when using a distortion pedal? And then 'resetting' when turning the amp off and on again?

Thanks for your reply

Yes, it's not unheard of, and it could even be an output tube issue. The most likely suspects with nearly any tube amp problem are the tubes. In this case, if not a tube issue, the next place to check would be the solder joints, or even the Plate resistors. But, the easiest thing to try first is tube substitution.

If it's new, I'd send it back. Why put up with it? Lou is right about the tubes. They can last decades or minutes. It's a crapshoot especially with current production tubes. Could just be a tube, sometimes the solder joints on the tube sockets could be bad too. I would also try unplugging the tube and reseating it too. Sometimes it's just an iffy connection on the tubes pins.

I don't think it's new enough that I can just send it back :/ I've had it for about three months, bought it at guitar center, turned down their coverage

Bongo, It should still be under warranty. Fender still has a five year warranty as far as I know.

As long as you don't change out the stock tubes Fender will fix it.

You can try different tubes without voiding the warranty. If a new tube(s) don't do the trick, put the originals back in and return for warranty check.

To me it is worth trying a tube substitution, which is easier than the hassle of bringing the amp back. Tubes are only covered by Fender for 90 days anyway.

As long as you use the same type of tube, and the amp is biased correctly, Fender will not void the warranty when using different tube manfacturers.
