What is the consensus on this amp?

I have wanted a Bassman 410 for a while, but this used Blues Deville came available and I am considering it. This may scratch that 410 itch.

The biggest thing they have in common is 4 10" speakers and a fender plate on them, IMO. One is a classic and the other good amp. I live with a '67 Fender BF Deluxe Reverb and own a HRDlll and both have one 12" speaker. They are nothing alike in sound. Only your ears will tell you which is right for you. We won't even discuss which type of 4x10''s they are. Don't let the speaker count alone guide you.

Thanks modwiz. Yeah, I live with a '66 Champ, '74 Vibro Champ, and '76 Twin Reverb, so I know what you mean. The Deville sounds fine with both a Tele and Strat. I may should have been more specific as to question the guys who have or had the USA made as opposed to the MIM version and get their input.

Yes, that does help. Given the amps you have, the Deville may be the way to get your 4x10 fix. Now to let deville owners respond. :D

In my opinion the Devilles were the only amps in the HR/Blues line worth having. I know I am in the minority there as most people prefer the Deluxe and the Junior. I vehemently disagree with the general consensus on that point. That said, it is generally preferable to have one of the early American made ones but that goes without saying. As far as how it compares to a Bassman, I will echo modwiz in that I don't think you'll find them to be the same amp at all but then they're not exactly in the same price category or circuit either. The Deville is nevertheless a useful amp. I sometimes wish I still had mine.

I own an american made deville 212 and I own a MIM blues deluxe. Both of these amps suffered from stock speakers that were way down on power to support the amps output. A suitable speaker upgrade and a substitution with 2 of the 3 preamp tubes to lower gain values, have made both
of these amps stellar in my opinion. With
that said, the new Deville 212 and Hot Rod
Deluxe 3 have both been upgraded with
new speakers and a few other refinements
that really are big improvements with
these amps in my opinion. Unfortunately, the Deville 410 and Blues Deluxe are still both carrying less than favorable stock speakers in my opinion. The Bassman amp comes with better quality speakers and a more suitable preamp tube line up however, this can easily be done with the Deville 410. my understanding is that the MIM amps are now coming with better internal parts than the ones that were originally in the American made versions that were subject to failure. Good luck in your decisions.

The DeVille isn't anything like the Bassman. I'd go with a Bassman Reissue not only for the tone, but build quality as well. I borrow my friends Bassman and that thing is amazing. I've used DeVille's as well and find no magic in them, but they get the job done. One thing to be aware of is any HRd series amp over ten years old is probably in need of a cap job. Let you ears be your guide. Tweed amps respond a little differently in terms of dynamics. Something you may or may not like.

63supro,

Thanks for the input. Any used amp I get, goes to my tech first for a check up and required refurb.
I may look some more for the Bassman, although this Deville has a good sound.

I agree that the Dvl isn't quite like a Bassman. Some years ago, I thought that the Dvl 4x10 would be similar enough to a Bassman so that I could use it for guitar and bass guitar also, so I bought one. I found that it wasn't good for bass at all, and it wasn't much like a Bassman in sound. But it was a great sounding amp in it's own way, very loud, clean and powerful, and I even liked the drive channel better than my HRDlx. Maybe some mods could change it enough, I don't know.

I only got rid of it because it was so darned heavy that I couldn't easily move it, even across the room. The guy that bought it had a smile on his face from the first second that he tried it, and is still enjoying it years later.

Great amp, but it's no Bassman.

That's for sure. 60 watts is a lot of power. I found the transition from a 100 watt 76 Twin Reverb to a HRDlx at 40 watts was a step wattage wise in the right direction, but dumping that for 15-20 watt amps was a tonal tube revelation. The drive channels in most modern Fender amps for me is just mediocre at best. My HRDlx fizz more fizz channels was an icepick in the forehead and at 40 watts was still too loud for most of my gigging situations.
The real eye opener for me was building the 5e3. This amp with the right speaker is a seriously giggable amp for sure. The Bassman Reissue will rip the paint off the walls, but the tone is more organic, dynamic and natural sounding and goes into tube distortion more quickly than a 60 watt DeVille. There is still plenty of clean on tap with a Bassman. But a DeVille ain't no Bassman in any way shape or form, but still you may like it better for your playing style.

I am now the owner of the Deville. I dropped her off at my tech's shop. We pulled the back panel to find the caps have already been replaced and who ever did the job was clean and professional. Left her for some tweaks (replacing the plastic replacement input jacks with Switchcraft and anything else he says needs to be replaced) and a check of the back of the PC board. All in all, not a bad deal.

A classic sounding amp with great tone and plenty of headroom. I have had my Deville 212 for the past 13 years and with only a speaker upgrade. This amp really sings and I'm very very satisfied with what it has given me all these years. Congratulations on your new acquisition.
