hello everyone.

i have read and heard from many places that putting lower gain preamp tubes (like a 12at7 or 12au7) in the V2 and V3 positions. This supposedly smooths out the distortion and makes the amp sound more "vintage."

does anyone have any experience with this on the hot rod or any other amp? Will it/did it work? Will it in any way harm my amp?

As long as im assured that it wont damage my amp, im will probably at least try it. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.

It didn't for me, but I really hated the flabby bass of the HRD.

Try the lower gain tubes, and turn the bass waaaaayy down. Then, get used to turning your guitar volume down. Dial in your clean tone with your guitar violume down.

One thing I liked about the HRD is that it responds well to pedals. So, aim for a great clean tone and use pedals/boosts and guitar volume knob to push it into overdrive.

Pop a Jan-philip 5751 in V3 if you want to tame it really nicely.
Check out my tube substitution post it might help you?
