I finally pulled the trigger on an 18 watt Marshall 1974x clone from Tube Depot.
Should be fun. You have to actually drill and install the turrets on this one. I have a drill press so it shouldn't be a biggie. I'm going to swage mount the turrets instead of press fit them. I'm also going to mod it with a tube/soild state rectifier switch. Not too sure about the Chinese made Celestion G12M Greenback. If I don't like it, I'll put a Weber in there. Maybe an Alnico 1225. We'll see. This amp was on sale for 10% off so I saved eighty five bucks on it. My bench is cleared and ready to go!!
Can't wait for this one to get here and it should be a nice compliment to the 5e3 I built a while back.

thats exciting! And a option from saggy to tight ! very cool
I just had to mic my 5E3 thru the PA today cause she wasn't loud enough with new drummer, but sounded far out with my sound coming from different angles - sorta gave me some lift - ANYways,
that amp you build is gonna be KILLA !!!

Thanks guys. I've been itching to build another amp. Twirlybogg, Is your 5e3 an 11 watt version? I haven't had to mic mine yet. Mie has a little more juice t it. It's the Tube Depot version. Rob Hull, the guy who designed the layout for it told me it's a little closer to 18 watts. It runs a GZ34 rectifier instead of a 5Y3, not sure if that has something to do with it and I also installed a Weber 12A125 in it. Nice speaker. It's also a PCB layout. I was a little apprehensive about the PCB, but it's a real high quality board. This thing is pretty loud and works great. I lent it to a friend of mine, for a decent sized bar, and It cut like a knife. Anyway, I'll post some photos as I build it.

I'm running the 5e3 with a 5Y3 rectifier. It is definitely quieter. I also have 5751's in there, too. It is a different amp with those.

That's for sure. I've been thinking about 5751's in my 5e3. My amps quiet for sure, the 5751's would tame the gain a bit. I have one in my Egnater Rebel 20 in V1. That amp had too much gain for my taste stock with the 12ax7. I do like the GZ34, it gives me a little more punch and less sag than a 5Y3. I'm caught in the middle. My single coil 72 Strat and my home brewed knotty pine Tele soung perfect through the Deluxe as is, my My Gibson LP Studio 60's Tribute with P-90's screams as do my Humbucker equipped guitars. That's where I think this Marshall clone will come in handy.

That 5e3 is a fun amp. So many tonal variations between the channel jumping and tone and volume interaction. I've had this amp for almost two years and gigged the snot out of it with no problems. I just wanted to be sure my reliability skills were up to snuff before I built another one. I just take my time and triple check everything as I go, and never build if I'm tired or drunk.

From what I understand, Howard used to coat his preamp circuits in opaque epoxy so you couldn't get the values of the components. Is there a real schematic floating around? That would be awesome.

That sounds nice. I've never played a Dumble buy I heard Sonny Landreth's live and it glorious sounding. I have no use for a 50 watt amp but the Lunchbox sounds great as well. I'll have to look for a side by side demo if there is such a thing because Dumble Amps are really rare. I know Howard was pretty secretive about his builds. Looks like a complex build.

One amp that has been on my bucket list for a long time is a low powered tweed twin.
I have a nice pair of brand new in the box 5U4GB RCA in my stash too 8)
I've owned a few boutique 5E3's and 59 bassman clones, only played one of Fenders low powered twins one time but it left an impression on me !

That's pretty cool. The low power Twins are sweet too.
My master plan is to use the A/B/Y box I built and run the 5e3 and the Marshall together. The perfect Fender/Marshall mix.

My A/B/Y box has isolation transformers in it too so it shouldn't be a problem.
