I'm thinking about getting the fender champion 40 watt combo amp. I just play at home in the living room with a couple friends, occasionally a drummer. My 15w frontman is too quiet when playing with others, and the 1/4" imput is just about finished. I may fix it some day but I haven't soldered in... 30yrs...damn I'm old.

Anyway, there's no mid range control! Why? I haven't looked at the mustang because I'm not interested much in computer interphase. I just want to plug and play. Am I being foolish? Is the computer interphase worth it with the mustang?

P.S. This website is aweful on a phone!

You can use any of the Mustangs without using Fuse, the computer interface. I initially avoided the Mustangs based on the same preconception, but after having been given access to one (MIV V2), it is the best amp I have ever owned.

I might guess at the answer, why no mid-control on a Champion 40 amp?

The amp voicing control might give you various amp tones-
British, tweed, blackface, and metal.

So that might account for a little different mid-control. Perhaps the designers didn't feel it was that important or a contributing factor to the overall sound. Anyway, great choice in an amp. I hope it works out for you. If I was playing with a drummer, I'd want a Champion 100.

Thanks guys. I'm avoiding tho champion 100 because I think it will be way to loud for when I'm playing by myself. The drummer does have to pull back a lot when I'm using my dying 40 Watt Crate amp., but he also just moved out of town. I think the Champ 100 will be just too loud with no drummer. What do you think?

I'm still hesitant about the mustang but keeping it in mind.

In addition to no mid control, the Champion 40 does not have the Jazz amp simulation. I also don't think it would be loud enough for all situations with a drummer. The Champion 100 is a lot heavier, but I think most of these solid state amps sound pretty good at low volumes. It's just a matter of adjusting the EQ--usually dropping the mids or boosting bass and treble. Another problem I have with Champion line is that it looks as though you can't play reverb and tremolo at the same time (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Hard to imagine that Fender doesn't include this combination of effects in an amp that's supposed to sound similar to the Twin Reverb.

The Mustang is pretty good, except you need to hook it up to a computer to control some parameters such as the Bright Switch. I don't even use a computer at home any more--everything is on my phone now, and there is no Fuse software for my phone. If everything was accessible with just the LCD screen, Mustang would be the way to go. Maybe there will be a software upgrade or a V.3 with this feature one day.

If you're looking outside the Fender family, another amp to consider is the Roland Cube series. Although they look goofy, if you like cleans, their JC Clean channel is to die for. I've played through the current 80 watt model on my CP Jazzmaster in a full band, and the tone was awesome. Both the 40 and 80 have mid controls, and the reverb has it's own controls so you can play it simultaneously with any of the other effects.

A limitation with all these amps is that they don't have external speaker jacks. I think the manufacturers feel the math required to master Ohm's Law is beyond the capacity of the average solid state amp buyer. Perhaps they are right.

The footprint is bigger with the Champion100, so if space is an issue buy the 40W.

I'm just thinking of a bigger sound, it doesn't have to be louder. It's only as loud as you turn it up too. I'm just kind of tired of all the 12" spk combos, so the two-12" spkrs is an interest to me. You also have/had a 40W crate, so,,, its different. It's a bigger amp cabinet with open back, so I'm thinking it will just have a more room filling, spacey tone, not any louder.

Please get the amp that you like the best. There's tube amp out there too. The Mustangs are cool, but a lot of button pushing, dials, tweeking, modeling effects. The Champion line is simple operation. Oh, I forgot to add the Champion100 has a mid-control on ch 2.

I tried a Mustang II a couple of years ago and hated it. I ended up bringing it back. I would go with the Champion 40 or the 100. Or you could go to Guitar Center's website www.guitarcenter.com and click on their used gear section where you can find some really decent used Fender amps for reasonable prices.
