Hi everyone,

two months ago I bought a Fender Champion 100. I loved the sound of this amp. I use the clean channel with a ME70 multieffects, and the "other" channel with some gain and a bit of delay for soloing. I mainly play an american telecaster guitar, no modding, with original single coil pickups.

I've been playing this amp at low volumes (2-3) but I've noticed that in louder volumes I can hear, when I play chords (such as G, D, C...), some "harmonic resonant" sound, in the thin strings. The guitar strings are tuned and the bridge is correctly adjusted. The same effect can be heard in my little roland cube 20, -it's quite common, specially for single coisl- but in the Fender it's somehow annoying... I've tested with my humbicker epiphone and it happens the same.

My question is double: (1) Does anyone experience this issue? and (2) Its this due to the clean and brilliant sound of Fender amps?

I know that I'm not talking about an expensive amp, but it should sound decently at least.

Sorry for any mistake in the language, I'm not a natural English speaker.

Thanks in advance.

Try fiddling w/the EQ settings. The more you raise the volume, the more you should lower the tone settings. That worked for me. As far as which notes gave me the nasty resonance, I don't remember.

Yes, EQing is always a solution, certainly. I just want to know if this is usual or I have a "rare" manufactured unit... Opinions?

Regards,

"rare"? :) IMO as long as you can rectify the problem via EQ settings I'm afraid you just have a normal amp.

Is this a sort of "ringing" sound? That would be some harmonics as suggested, but I wonder if it is something else vibrating, such as something loose in the chassis or something near the amp vibrating. It took awhile for me to figure out that a door on my entertainment center was vibrating when I played louder/low notes, because it didn't quite sound like a door rattling. :?:

Yes, the fact that it's coming from two different amps, using two different guitars on each, suggests it's neither the amps nor the guitars. In my case, it turned out to be light bulbs in the recessed ceiling lights rattling.

Hi,

thanks for your answers. I have YouTubed a recording of the resonant thing (listen carefully at the end of the chords):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_gBGUZJDdg

I have some clues: when I listen through the headphones, there is (almost) no resonation. So, I guess this may be due to some slightly loosen parts or the speakers themselves...

Regards from Catalonia,

t.

tonimballeste you need to make the video public to enable us to hear it. The fact that you can't hear the resonation w/headphones still leaves a few possibilities. Have you tried playing your amp in different room?

I can't say that I really hear anything wrong. You say it happens in the Fender and in your Roland, and with both your Tele and Epi.

I notice that you were striking the strings fairly hard, and the only thing I can think of is that maybe you are setting your action too low for your playing style and the strings are bottoming out and buzzing.

Try raising the action and see if anything changes.

I've listened to the vid repeatedly and I don't hear anything that would cause me to exchange the amp. As I mentioned in my earlier post you should change the EQ settings when you change the volume. Also remember that SS amps are generally colder sounding than tube amps. As for resonance it may be coming from something else in the room or even the room itself, but it's not evident in the vid.

Thanks for all your replies. I'll do some tests during next week. I'll test the amplifier in another room (I must say I play the guitar in a room inside my basement, with wood, curtains, carpets, etc.). Maybe I'll connect an external celestion speaker (8ohm - 100W) to see if there's some amplification. Also, I'll adjust the bridge...
