Nah, I owned a 66 and the new one isn't even close. I played that amp for 25 years until some scumbag stole it. I keep hoping Fender would reissue the original without a PCB and with quality components. Anyone who claims they sound the same or even close never owned an original.
It's not a bad sounding amp, just not even close. It needs to be taken on it's own merits for sure.
There seems to be some quality issues cropping up too. Anytime the word "custom" comes into play, it means Fender screwed with the original design and added junk to it. There was nothing wrong with the original designs. CBS did the same thing adding master volume and gain controls. The new Fender amps went even further to "customize" the amps to add features thus destroying the legendary "Fender Sound".

My 68 custom twin sounds dam close to a old one I tried and has better features. A guy on another board owned the old vibrolux and his new one sounds pretty close to the old one so he's very happy.

I digress and off on a tangent.
My apologies for steering the bus off course. :)

Clearly there are those who have heard the older vintage amp and the modern version and find the modern versions to sound just as good.
And there are those who think the new versions don't even come close.

It would be a great test to do a "blind" listening test of older/vintage Fender amps compared to their modern versions.
To keep things more even and to compare amp innards the speaker/s should be the same, because speakers make a big difference, and this would be an amp only comparison.
And, the same tubes need to be used as that makes a big difference too.
Keeping the tubes and speakers the same allows a comparison of just the hand wired individual electronics to modern PC boards and their parts and wiring.
That would be really cool and I'd love to hear it. :)

+1K...but don't hold your breath Supro, Fender is NOT going to ever accommodate you. No offense to Fender, but it is no longer in their business plan to build such amps.

Im just saying what I heard this guy owned one of the originals and says it sounds close. I played a 70's twin for a good hour testing a guitar out loud and I played mine the next day and was completely satisfied with the tone. Very similar also! not like the RI amps!! Like Randall Smith of Mesa Boogie said that handwired amps he worked on back in the day all sounded some what different from each other because of the hand wired and thats one reason he rather use PCB for constant tone to one amp to another.

The reason they can't sound the same are many, but my 66 had a GZ34 rectifier tube and the Silverface Vibrolux had I believe a 5U4 rectifier tube. The new Custom Vibrolux amps are solid state rectified. Just by that alone you will get more headroom and a little more power. But they lack the compression and sweet complex distortion of the originals. Mine also had Jenson C10Q soeakers in it. The first thing I noticed was the new Vibrolux Reverb didn't break up at ll like my 66. Not even close and given cheaper components are used and probably different iron too, thy just don't sound the same. Like I said before, it doesn't sound bad, just not the same. Like I also said, if people say they sound even close to the BF or SF amps, they never owned one.

I don't need Fender. I'd just build one. I won't own a new Fender amp.
