I have a reissued 600 (bought new, but long out of warranty). I replaced the tubes with Tong-Sols and the speaker with a Jensen. I hardly every use the amp, so it has sat for a long time.

With that said, whenever I play the amp, there is a static-y/white noise sound at lower volumes. It tends to mostly go away once I reach 9+ on the volume, but maybe not completely.

I really don't think it's the tubes, since it did does it with stock tubes too.

When I hit the off switch, there is a splash of static noise that fades away.

Any idea what might be going on?

1- Noise test must be do with nothing plug in the amp ; Is that you do ?

2- Can do some noise ; cell phone , PC , halogene and neon lamp, electrical motor and more.....

3- Do some test on other room or house

Yeah...I have the same experience. Buzzy around 7-9 on the volume, and underlying hum at all levels. I replaced the power tube as well after it failed, and the tech said he reduced the bias a tad. No difference in the noise level. It is what it is...

Your tech don't have any idea where the noise come from ?

For mine, the noise I am talking about is "not" ambient or interference noise. The amp has a slight hum when on, but it's not bad at all. Changing rooms doesn't matter. The crackle only happens when playing through it. If I can, I will record the sound it makes.

My other observation is that when the amp is pegged, the overdrive sound is very "buzzy" sounding and I don't know if that is normal for these little amps. Again, I upgraded the tubes and speakers.

I am playing a Les Paul Studio through the amp.

Crackle ; tubes , bias too hot on output tube , broken solder or copper printed circuit .
Hum ; filter caps

A broken solder or coper printed circuit may have disconnect filter cap = hum and crackle

The hum in these particular amps is normal, it seems better or worse depending on your location in relation to the amp.

As for some of the noises, it might just be the speaker farting and/or the cheesy grill cloth flapping. One of the best and cheapest things that you can do to improve the amp is to change the grill "cloth" to something better.

Stratele, the Champion 600 RI is a single-ended amp. It is very hard to make these completely quiet, as you don't have the benefits of push-pull cancelling effect.

If I remember correctly from the last one I worked on, the C600 RI has dual heater lines (unlike the original Champs). These are already wrapped to help cancel 60Hz hum. About the only other things one could try is different placement of the leads (esp the ones to the sockets). And shielded cables from the input.

I "may" have solved my problem...I replaced the volume pot with a regular 1M pot, and so far I have not heard the static noise yet...more testing to come though. Seems like the volume has also be increased with this change too, but I'm not sure about that though.

While I was in there I also changed the grill cloth to an oxblood cloth. It looks really good and seems to have opened up the amp quite well too.

Thanks for the update. What potentiometer did you use (manufacturer)? Also, how easy was the swap out? Can you post a pic of the Oxblood cloth...I am thinking of doing the same.

I just used a Radio Shack pot since I was just experimenting. I will probably replace it with a CTS brand some day. Note that the hole the stock pot passes through is small and a 3/8 in. bushing diameter pot will not fit, unless you drill it out...I didn't do that this time around.

I followed these instructions http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=63259 to replace the pot. You have to cut the input PCB to replace the pot.

For the grill cloth, it was my first attempt at doing that, so I did okay. I used this video to assist me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ1H3_uv2uE

I also painted the opposite side of the speaker baffle black to keep things dark. If you don't, the light colored wood shines through the cloth. My lines in the cloth weren't perfectly straight as it is hard to work with.

Here's the final look. It's not perfect, but hey, looks good enough for me.

Note that the amp still has a steady tube amp hum, but the crackling and noise associated with the volume control seems to have stopped.
