Hello All

Yesterday I bought a 68 Deluxe amp that I have to admit has the most amazing tone. I originally had an old Fender Twin that had a wonderful tone but was very unreliable. I traded this in for a Blues Hotrod Deluxe but was never happy with the sound of this amp.

So anyway I love the tone of my new amp but am not sure that it should be so noisy when idling i.e. with nothing plugged into it and the volumes right down, there is a considerable amount of noise/hum. When playing, it is not noticeable but I am using this as a studio amp and thus have some concern about the noise.
Has anyone else had this issue and if so, is it possible to get rid of it?

Many thanks and kind regards

Andrew

Try some good contact cleaner between the tubes and the sockets. And the input jacks. They have grounding-out contacts that can get dirty and cause some noise issues, too.

Work the cleaner into the sockets by removing and replacing each tube several times, one-by-one. I like Caig Deoxit GN-5.

My 68 CDR is not that noisy at idle, but there is a very light hum which doesn't bother me as it's not that bad.
Plugging my 68 CVR into the same power source results in the CVR being nearly dead quite at idle, so it's not the power source.
The CVR is over all quieter than my CDR at idle, but again my CDR is not bad at all.

It's possible that you may have a poorly functioning tube.
Also, I notice that if you're in either channel, then keep the unused channels volume all the way off. If the volume is turned up on the unused channel it tends to create some noise hiss/hum coming through the channel you are using.

If you have some spare pre tubes try rolling the tubes around and note if there are positive changes. If there are, then that leads to some poor functioning pre tubes.
Also, as an experiment, try removing the reverb and tremolo tubes and note if the amp is quieter.

If the amp is really noisy at idle and tube rolling/changes don't fix it, then consider getting a replacement.
There have been a good number of players who say they went through 2 or 3 of the
68 CDR's before they found a good one.

In my case I thought I had a couple of CDR's that were faulty as they developed really scratchy volume pots. The first one has a lightly scratchy vol pot on the custom channel right out of the box. I swapped in some older pre tubes and the scratchiness got worse.
So, I returned it and got another one. It was fine until I put in the same pre tubes as I used in the first one. All of a sudden both vol pots got scratchy and left me scratching my head. After a few days of being unhappy with what I thought was a second bad CDR, I swapped in the OEM pre tubes as I was getting ready to return that one.
All of sudden the pots went quiet and normal.
It was the faulty pre tubes that I had put in that caused the scratchy vol pot problem!
Learned something new there. I had NEVER ever experienced such a thing as that before in any tube amp. But I also never had a Fender amp either. :)
These amps really respond to different tubes in both good and bad ways.
Make sure the tubes you use are of good solid quality.

Good luck with yours. Great amp, don't give up on them.
There ARE good quiet ones out there, keep trying you'll find a quiet one, or quiet enough. :)

Thanks Guys for the replies. I think I'll take it back and see what they say. And yes, I wont give up on it as it is the exact sound I want - I play a 1974 Rickenbacker 330 and a Gibson Non-reverse FIrebird and they both sound wonderful through the amp.

Kind regards

Andrew
