Anyone familiar with and maybe have any tips on getting this new AMP to sound more "compressed" like a Super Reverb or older RI Vibroverb  but without using a "compression/noise gate" pedal? Any ideas? Thanks :)

I had the orange coloured princeton and i found that the louder the better for that lovely compression (sag)... which is mainly produced by having a tube rectifier,
also i fitted an EH12ax7 on the input tube as this gives a bit more gain upfront and a little more sag at the output stage.

best wishes ....andy

I also forgot to say that a must for me was replacing the ceramic speaker for the alnico as this gives you that super reverby saggy bottom end.

A Super Reverb sounds compressed?

Even the deluxe Reverb with its GZ34 Rectifier tube has a hard time getting a compressed sound without help.
Again thats why I use a comp pedal and the route 66 just sounds great to me.
Ya gotta get an amp with 5Y3GT rectification to get compressed any where under cranked up.
5U4B can get ya there too, the big 5AR4 / GZ34 is pretty tight sounding

To me the Blackface Super Reverb, Vibroverb, VibroKing have a really nice compressed sound at low volume without pedals but maybe it's just me. Anyways, I put a Ragin Cajun speaker in it and tried this Zoom G1Xon pedal and it's playable now - I'll probably change back the the original speaker tho so Amp weighs less, i'm weak :-)

That 66 route pedal looks real nice so does that picture of your deluxe and strat :) I never knew much about rectifier tubes but now you have me interested to learn more. Mine uses same GZ34 and maybe I'll try Solid state one if possible or see about using a 5Y3 (mod) without blowing up the Amp or i'll just leave it alone :) Thanks for the ideas !

There are two ways to use the word compression with regard to the guitar universe. There is gain compression and there is dynamic (volume) compression. Those might sound like different names for the same thing but they're not.

There is gain compression where an amplified waveform is distorted due to attempts to fortify amplitude beyond a threshold limit inherent in the amp's design resulting in a clipping of the waveform.

There is dynamic compression where the level of a signal prior to amplification is either strengthened or limited by a circuit which seeks to establish and maintain upper and lower threshold level limits.

Neither of those apply to a Super Reverb at low volumes. In fact, at low volumes the exact opposite of both is true.

Whatever you think compression is, you are mistaken. You should learn a little more about the lingo. Hanging around here will help.

Perhaps you could describe what you mean when you say compression and maybe we can help you figure out the correct terminology and help you find what you're looking to achieve.

Not always true. I'm talking about regular "tube" compression. It's no biggie :) Some Amps are biased hotter and sound more compressed. I was just wondering if anyone had tips with this one or done anything or know anything about the Princeton's - maybe factory setting is biased colder etc etc or maybe it's just the particular Amp. Anyways I might try another GZ34 type tube and/or if brave enough pop in a 5Y3

That would be my suggestion. A Weber alnico would be my choice. I am going to upgrade my Emi Lil Buddy to a Weber 10" hemp coned alnico. The 10A150H in my SCX2.

Enjoy that Princeton, it would be the one I'd buy.

If you say so.
I always thought the Super was about as open sounding an amp as one was likely to find.

I just had the Rajin Cajun laying around here. I am going to look into a Alnico but so far I'm digging it as-is-now.. tho I did end up using a compressor pedal which did the trick for low-volume playing. One thing with the Rajin Cajun it makes the Amp a lot more "clean" sounding -- no break-up when it's turned to 8. With the original speaker it was sometimes nice when it starts to "crap" out around 4-5 :) but not really :) The SCX2 I really want to try one of them!! They've been my all time favorite sounding Y!tube sensation Amps... was on my list to grab one.. but this Amp here was given to me and now I might stick with it, but I hate lots of tubes and the extra weight : ) A nice Alnico would lighten it up some.

I love them!!! and now this Princeton sounds like one, only better haha :) jus kddin.. it actually sounds more of a Vibroverb to me now, for real.. so it's all cool. Love this damn Princeton w/ the GX1on pedal... the pedal is so transparent!!

Just so you know swapping out that GZ34 5AR4 for a solid state rectifier would do the opposite of adding compression, the solid state would eliminate any "sag" and tighten up the overall sound even more.

The tube amp book and the Fender amp books both have pretty good sections on rectifiers and how they shape your sound and the feel of the amp, a good read for anyone wanting to enter the world of tone hounds 8)
