Hello everyone,
I just bought a brand new Deluxe reverb limited edition. absolutely LOVE the amp. I'm in tone heaven with this thing. I've only had it about a week and have only stopped playing it long enough to eat and sleep. I noticed sometimes i get a random "Pop" noise. It only happens maybe twice every 3-4 hours and is just a quick but noticeable pop sound. it isn't real loud and there is no other sounds such as hissing or humming. This happens when i'm playing and when i'm not. Is this something i should have checked out? it doesn't effect the playability of the amp or really bother me, I just want to know if its something that will get worst or eventually cause my amp to fail. Thanks for any advice.

Hi justingbbragg,

Just an educated guess here, but it could be an output tube(s)....or a preamp/PI tube, but past experience leads me to look at an output tube(s) first. Some 6V6 tubes can't handle higher screen grid voltage, or it could be just a defective tube.

How would you recommend i go about diagnosing the problem? is there an easy way i can check it out myself without taking the amp apart?

Probably the easiest way would be tube substitution. You should have spares anyway, so substituting another set of output tubes could prove whether or not it's the tubes. Of course it is very important to check the bias when changing output tubes, and that requires a meter and some technical knowledge, and/or some bias probes. No need for bias check when swapping preamp/PI tubes. No need to disassemble the amp to check and set bias, as the pot is accessible from the outside of the chassis behind a transformer, and bias probes go between tube and socket.

I think everyone who has one of these....or other tube amp, needs to invest in spare tubes so as to quickly diagnose issues.Your collection should at least consist of known GOOD power tubes, as well as at least one of each GOOD 12AX7 and 12AT7.
Better to have more.

Have you checked to be sure your Guitar cable or or output jack is not causing the problem :?: :?:

Any amp 's test should be done with no guitar , nothing plug to the amp's input jacks,
Just the amp alone .

I feel your pain. And yes, you should check it out to the best of your abilities first without taking the amp apart. I've had a handful of oddball tube amp issues over the years, as have most tube amp players. My two cents is that it's either:

1. An electrical line surge in the physical wiring where you're playing (presumably your house/apartment). As in... a surge from the electrical outlet going to your amp.

2. A faulty tube(s).

Try playing the amp for a few days in another room in the house, preferably plugged into an outlet on a different circuit. Or even better, playing it at another location for as long as you can. If this fails to diagnose it, you'll have to start replacing tubes one-by-one (or in the case of the power tubes, both at once) to troubleshoot and narrow down which tube(s) has gone bad. Yes, they can be faulty right out of the box.

Keep in mind that you didn't only pay for the amplifier, you also paid for a warranty. If you choose to keep that specific amp and not exchange it for another, and cannot remedy the problem yourself, do not hesitate to exercise your warranty. You paid for it!
