We've got a bit of hiss on our Twin Reverb and temporarily added my Big Muff Pi to the lineup for the noise gate (and it worked) so I though I'd like to find a pedal that is merely a noise gate. Any recommendations?

Why not address the hiss instead? Sometimes a noisy tube(s), sometimes lead dress, sometimes other issues, but in any event, your amp could be quiet on it's own. I was never a fan of working on the symptoms instead of fixing the cause of the symptoms. A Twin Reverb, even at volume, should be very quiet.

TBH, I would prefer that. I just hope I'm not opening a can of worms.

It is the special edition (blonde tolex) '65 reissue. Great sounding amp, aside from a constant hiss that gets annoying when sitting idle. Not as noticeable when playing. I have not checked for loose tubes or anything yet. I'm new to messing around with tube amps. It was a recent gift for my wife and I didn't want to tear it apart (at least until I knew what I was doing).

I had read somewhere that the older model Fender amps always have a bit of hiss?

Some CBS made Fender amps named Silverface amp , most of the time , poor wiring dress because cost cutting by CBS . Or old amp wich need to see a tech .

A well built Fender amp is very quiet . And any well built amp with good tubes is quiet .

Every Fender amp that I have, or have had, is as quiet as can be. Some have needed new tubes, some needed lead dress, some even had bad plate resistors that I replaced. Hint, one of the best things that you can do for a vintage amp is to get rid of as many carbon comps as necessary to get rid of hiss that they can cause. It is a myth that CC resistors have any tonal magic.

High gain amps on the other hand, are inherently hiss prone, especially when using much gain.

Thanks for your comments. Shimmilou, you just dropped a bunch of terms on me that I need to go look up...

The issue seems to build as any pedals are connected to it. The more pedals, the worse the noise.

That sounds about right. Pedals can amplify any noise that you already have, and some pedals can add noise of their own, especially distortion pedals.

I bought a Fender '68 Custom Twin Reverb about six months ago and I have that same hiss problem. When I first got it the power tubes were rattling, so I got that warrantied. When I got it back is when I noticed the hiss at idle issue. I took it back to the service center, they kept it for two weeks and then told me that it does not hiss as much as other amps at idle.

Most folks might believe that, but I have four other Fender tube amps that do not hiss at idle as much.

My temp fix is that I am using a Weber Mini Mass attenuator. I do not have to crank it down too much and it takes damn near all of the hiss out of the signal. Only problem is it is rated only for 50 watts, so I am going to get one of the 100-150 watt ones and be done with it, until I can find another service center for a second opinion..

I am really liking the amp, except for that annoying hiss, might just gut it out of the cab and stick a point to point Twin Reverb in it of some sort.. Pretty sad to spend 1300.00 on an amp that hisses so much, but lesson learned.. I have a Boss RC3 loop pedal that cost 200.00 and it is just about unusable because it hisses so much in everything I have ever plugged it into...

I spend most of my time playing in my studio and it is pretty silent, so if you gotta a hiss going on in the background while I am trying to write songs, it is annoying as $uck having that distraction in the headphones...

I tried some 12ay7's in the v1, v2 and v4 and that did not help. I have 7025's in it now and it did help a little.. I ordered some 5751's and I am gonna give those a try next... I have disconnected the reverb wires, no change. My power is going through a spendy ac line filter into my studio and all of my other amps and equipment are dead silent. I think it is some kind of component flaw or bad wiring in the amp.

My other Fender amps are, 65 DRRI, Fender BDRI, 1991 Fender Blues Deville 410 and a 1972 Fender Musicmaster Bass..
I have a 400.00 Egnater Tweaker 15 that knocks the crap out of all of those as far as being silent at idle, but I really like the Fender amp mojo...

Did you do some tests to see where noise , hiss is coming ? From which stage ?

Remove V1 , did you hear hiss ?

Yep did that, pulled out the preamp tubes one by one and powered it up.. The v4 one took out all of the hiss, but no sound from the speaker..

V4, half is reverb recovery and half is final gain stage for vibrato channel. If you unplugged both reverb cables and the hiss remains, you might be looking at the circuit around the V4 half that is the final gain stage for the vibrato channel.

Is the noise present on both channels or only one? Have you tried a known good tube in V4? You could even swap V1 and V4 as a quick check. This isn't definitive but might be telling, by putting the suspected noisy tube on the normal channel only, then see if the noise is still present on both channels, or only one channel.

I've not pursued this issue since I posted a few months back. We've just not used fx pedals much since then and only had one noise issue with it, but it was sudden and extremely noisy and we do not know why it happened. We just "rebooted" the amp and it went away. But since I don't know enough about the internal workings of these amps I am planning to take it to a recommended local tech to give it a once-over soon.
