So, played a gig this weekend and my amp was working great.

At rehearsal last night I plugged in and was astonished at how low volume I was getting.

It seems to not be powering up correctly. I'm still getting volume but just not as much. I'm wondering what it could be.

The power tubes are less than a year old. I'm going to switch out all of the pre amp tubes.

Anybody have this issue?

To be more clear it's as if the power has been cut in half. In the normal channel it doesn't get loud until 7 (even then very quiet compared to the wall shaking it sound it should get).

and in the drive channel it sounds like a clean amp.

Thanks for any leads!

Most likely a tube, try the preamps first

However, with the description of the "power cut in half", it seems more likely that one output tube has failed.

Tubes can last for decades, or only a year, or even less if the bias is too hot. Be sure that the bias is set properly whenever changing output tubes. Incorrect bias can result in premature tube failure. Or tubes can fail for no apparent reason. :(

Yeah, I think the first thing will be to replace all the tubes.

I did have a resistor blow (the R57) last year and replaced it. So I hope it has nothing to do with that nonsense.

Thanks!

R57 is the Plate resistor for one half of the PI tube. Bad resistor could be due to a faulty PI tube? That same problem could result in loss of volume, as only half of the PI would be functioning.

Replacing all tubes is a shotgun approach, not very efficient, and might be an unnecessary expense. Troubleshooting would be your best bet, find the problem instead of guessing. If you want to try tubes, I would try substituting the preamp/PI tubes one at a time, using one known good 12AX7. Try the replacement in the PI, if no difference, replace the original and repeat for other positions. For output tubes, replace as a pair, and proper bias is very important.

If you have a blown plate resistor on the PI tube, or a blown screen grid resistor on an output tube, or even some other circuit problem, then tube substitution will be a waste of time and money.

New Development:

Fiddling with it last night. When I touched V3 tube it made a crack and pop noise. Switched out the tube. Fiddled with it again, made the same noise. No other tubes do this.

Could it be a cold solder joint on the tube socket?

Or is it the socket itself?

V3 is the PI, and yes it could be a poor solder joint or the tube socket, or it could even be a Plate resistor. Use a magnifier to check the solder joints, resistors and tube socket connectors.

Put new tubes in it. Still nothing. Going to have to dig deeper. I must say, this amp has been an uphill battle since day one. :|

How old is this amp and what other issues have you had with it??.. perhaps it's still under warranty ? I would strongly suggest that you take it to a repair shop and let someone who knows what they're doing if your not sure, to resolve this issue and give it a good going over and hopefully you won't have any more problems with it. This amp is mass produced at the factory like most other fender products and occasionally some lemons do get through the line of production. I have the same amp and it is almost 3 years old and fortunately, I have had zero issues with it and it gets played all the time. However, I did upgrade the speaker and changed out two of the three preamp tubes to lower gain values to render an amp with cleaner headroom at higher volumes and a much more usable volume sweep with the volume dial. I like the amp when I purchased it..but I really like now with these few changes :D
