Hi all,

This is my first post here, so hi! I'm a proud new owner of a DRRI, about 1.5 years old that I bought used, everything stock. I'm looking to do a bunch of the standard mods to it, speaker upgrade, will then re-tube and re-bias.

I will be using the amp primarily clean, and the #1 thing I'd like to maximize is ability to get Eric Johnson style clean tones, big, bright, shimmery, spanky (you know the drill). Secondarily I might attempt some SRV / blues with various overdrives through it, Hendrix style clean tones, etc. Not looking to crank the amp and get overdriven tones on its own, or get dark creamy sounds.

Any good speaker recommendations for this setup? In stock form as many people report, the amp is really bright, sometimes in a pleasing way, sometimes not. But the sound is in the ballpark for what I want for the EJ clean sound, using a strat in the 2 and 4th positions. I've been disappointing with neck pickup tones, I've found that really muddy (its an EJ strat) and lacking clarity. One thing, I'm aiming to use a Catalinbread Belle Epoch for tape delay sounds (I've got an EP-3 as well, but probably won't be using it for this). This preamp in it rolls off so much high end from the signal that I lose the nice shimmer and sparkle even in 2 and 4th position.

So ideally I'm hoping for something that can help retain that beautiful high end, maybe clear up the neck pickup sounds, but not too harsh? Originally thought about the Weber 12F150 which seems to be the standard first replacement that most people try, but I'm wondering if it might just be too dark. Been doing lots of research and am overwhelmed with various things that look like they might do the trick:

- Weber California (paper cone?)
- Warehouse G12C or G12C/S
- Eminence Swamp Thang
- Weber Chicago

Just gets beyond confusing. I'm not looking for anything used / vintage, otherwise the JBL D120F would seem an obvious match. Also confused about ceramic vs. alnico! I'm pretty new to this speaker game, I've never swapped anything on an amp before.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Jason

You want EJ cleans, get a TR.

Swamp Thang has been my go to and has serious bottom !
You won't find any other that will give you the bouncy bottom from the Swamp Thang
I have tried C-rex, several webers (excellent by the way) and WGS Veteran 30 and by far the Swamp thang does that powerful but clean sound better than the rest.

They say the Swamp Thang was designed for the American Rock sound and I do believe they got it right.

PS I use a sweet 5751 in V-2 for the soul purpose of emulating Strat blues and it really helps !

Check this out for some more DRRI stuff

Also a little advice on speaker swaps for DRRI's remove both back panels, get yourself a long phillips screw driver #2 and unscrew the baffle board screws, remove the speaker wires and the whole thing comes out of the front without removing the chassis.
