Hi all,

Am I the only one who wished there were more models with a solid pine cab? Even a limited run, I would snatch a Twin Reverb immediately.
Who's with me on this one?

The '68 is not a RI, nor a Twin for that matter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Twin Reverb was always made w/a plywood cab for a definite sonic purpose. i.e. they wanted less resonance from the cab in order to get more clean head room. Specifically designed for guitar. Whereas the older tweeds, w/pine cabs were meant to be all purpose amps. At least I think I read that somewhere.

Actually I should've included all of the black face amps.

The blackface amps were pine, I'm positive about that.

In any case I would always be in favor of any improvement in the quality of materials & construction of any amp. Whether I could afford it is another story. :)

Having just put together a pine cabinet tweed I'm pretty sure I'd go with plywood if I had to do it again. Pine looks great but is soft compared to good plywood.

Eastern white pine definitely need to be covered. The so called "pine" from the local lumber yard is garbage in my opinion.

I purchased a 20th Anniversary Vibro King in Pine and love it. Great sounding amp! Comparing it to my 1990's Vibro King the pine cab adds some warmth and also has a little bit better head room before break up.
Its also lighter in weight its about 62 pounds. My 1993 Vibro KIng weighs 72 lbs.
The only negative about pine is I heard it dents easily so I ended up getting a thick cover for it from studio slips.

Pine is a softer lumber than say ash, walnut, or maple. But it's very strong and resonant, which is why Leo Fender specified it for all of his cabinetry. As long as you don't fling it about like some airport knuckle-dragger manhandling a piece of Samsonite luggage into a 747 or a Scarebus, your amp will be fine. If you have legitimate handling/loading concerns, buy an Anvil case.

I bought my pine Vibro King online from Guitar Center
they sold me a floor model and when I got it it had a ding in it.

So I returned it. I contacted Fender and They sent me a brand new one in the box which was very cool.
I am not sure how that ding got in
it but it was on the top of the amp and about the size of a quarter.
My studio slips cover will do. I dont plan on taking that amp on any road trips. I only use it locally.
I have it protected and I am very careful with it. The pine is not an issue with me at all.

I feel the sonic advantages of a pine cabinet far outweighs the softness issue. My 5e3 clone is pine and it's a very lively and resonant cabinet.

Thats a good analogy of the pine resonant. :D

I'm happy to hear you like pine, thats what I chose for my 2x12 cabinet. It's low cost and easy to work with.
