Hi,

I bought a brand new DRRI and installed a brand new Celestion Gold speaker and thus replaced the Jensen factory speaker. I started to notice this really weird gurgling noise when you flip the Standby switch to the Up position when the Reverb pot was <1. The noise generated specifically sounded like [url="Hi, I bought a brand new DRRI and installed a brand new Celestion Gold speaker and thus replaced the Jensen factory speaker. I took it to a Fender Gold Repair Center in Florida and they came back with this: "The reverb 'gurgling' is a result of the aftermarket Alnico-magnet Celestion speaker that is installed; Alnico magnets have a very large and powerful magnetic field and this kind of thing is fairly common when in close proximity to reverb tanks and cables." Anyone else seen anything like this. I would think if the rather common DRRI is impacted like this then not only would it have these problems but many combo amps of similar build.

Sounds like BS too me. I put an Alnico in my PRRI and it's only a few inches from the reverb tank. No problems.

Well the reverb tank in the DRRI is the same size as a TRRI. I have both and swapped them once to diagnose a problem. Since the reverb springs are longer, who knows. Actually, so many of us have swapped speakers so much, maybe we, or I , have never noticed. If it doesn't gurgle while on and performing well, I wouldn't care.

You would notice this sound every time you turned off the Standby.

I don't suppose you somehow reversed the reverb plugs?

I have to agree. You can also just turn down the reverb when switching the standby. I'm a little skeptical w/Fenders explanation though. Ceramic mags are quite powerful too.

Just curious, did you try the amp w/the stock speaker?

I got everything at once when I bought the amp. So I uninstalled the Jensen and installed the Celestion before I even turned it on.

Fenders explanation might be a round about way of telling you that you voided the warranty. But TBH it just sounds like a normal reverb sound to me, like when you jostle the amp when the reverb is activated. It's a bit weird that it does that at such a low intensity setting. How does the amp & reverb sound otherwise?

It is an odd sound, and it does sound "reverby". :)

If the amp and reverb work fine, then don't worry about it.
The loud "pop" I get with my 68 CDR is more obnoxious than that sound you're getting, but it only happens why I turn standby on, which is really only right before I shut it down.
It sucks and it shouldn't be there and my CVR doesn't make any noise on activating standby, but I'm over it.

If you want to see if it is a magnetic field issue you could remove the reverb tank and get some longer RCA cables, move the tank out of the amp and off to the side and see it the sound goes away.
If it is the magnet maybe look into getting a speaker magnet shield or make one.
I found this DIY on how this guy shielded some speakers.
http://www.andrewrondeau.com/Voight%20P ... lding.html

But I'd try removing the tank and testing before getting into shielding just to make sure.
Or you can just put the stock speaker back in and try it out.

The Celestion in my CDR has a pretty big magnet and I don't hear that sound.
But it makes me wonder if some of the odd reverb quality of the CDR may be related to the big magnet on the V type speaker.
Hmmmmmm........
I'll plug the CDR into my 2x12 cab with V30's and pay attention to the reverb quality just to see if there is some magnet effect on the reverb.
But I've had plenty of smaller combo amps with reverb tanks with large magnet speakers and have never heard that sound.

That would be really $hitty of Fender if they tried to void warranty just because someone replaced the stock speaker.
Heck people swap and replace tubes that aren't stock and tubes directly effect the amp electronics.
As long as the speaker is the correct impedance Fender would be stretching to void warranty.
If they did I'm sure the would have told him directly that the warranty now void.

I hope your right. I don't know Fenders policy. Just expressing an opinion. Tongue in cheek fashion.

So I contacted Celestion and asked them if there were any known Incompatability issues with a Celestion AlNico speaker and the DRRI. To be honest, The guy started to laugh. Celestion offered to test my speaker if needed but the guy was pretty adamant about this noise not being related to the Magnetic sphere.

Meanwhile Fender wants to reinstall the stock speaker to see if it reproduces.

The Fender Authorized Repair tech says he checked 14 DRRI's with stock speakers and the noise is normal.

I then called several people I know with DRRI's and asked if they hear this noise when flipping the Standby to off with the reverb on and it's pot set to >1. Of course every person I called said no. I did the same with music shops in town around me and got the same answer. The noise produced by my amp is unique.
