I`m researching the DRRI.How many of you still have the origional speaker the combo came with new. Jenson C12K? Have some changed or upgraded? to what speaker and how does it sound? I`m kinda on the fence between buying a DRRI head, or the combo! In this case would a head/with cab be any better than one speaker setup? or just an upgraded speaker from standard issue in the combo? 1st...just very curious as to what works well! what others have tried and feel? Is it only combo setup that clicks!. 2nd...Sidenote:Looking at Super R with attenuator also.
mojjett:Thanks especially for your earlier replys. is this "legendary tone" as origional setup?what speaker is in your combo?
Thanks for any opinions and shared experiences. A lot said and asked.PS: I`ve been listening/watching on youtube to the intheblues Gear, amp demo & reviews video #14 on this amp, and the "clean Breakup" trailor and have been completely in awe!

I have the sensitive Wizard speaker in my drri. Lots more volume, which also equates to more headroom.
It's staying.

Still have the Jensen, I like it. I did some tube rolling and used the tubes that sound the best with the stock speaker. I only needed to change the JJ made GT output tubes to EH GTs, and changed the JJ made GTs in V1 and V2 to Mullard RI and TAD respectively, and the amp sounds great. :D

Thanks. +1 for the Jensen stock & tube info. Many change tubes I understand.

jeff, you make some interesting points. IMO the "legendary tone" can be a bit subjective. But generally it's referring to the Deluxe Reverbs breakup sound & not so much it's clean. Lots of folks think the Jensen C12K is a bit of a miss match w/the DRRI, & they swap in something else. Most of them are pleased w/the results. Occasionally someone will return to the stock Jensen. I've kept my DRRI stock, except for a set of JJ tubes. I similarly wanted more output & clean headroom. The JJs in the power section pretty much gave enough so that I didn't feel the need to swap speakers, yet! ATM I'm content. I'm not sure which intheblues video you're talking about, but the ones I'm seeing are the stock '65 DRRI & custom '68DR. So if you dig the sound of either or both, you got your answer. Ultimately it's whatever floats your boat.

Yep.....I agree that concerning a speaker, it's what you want the sound to be.
However.....good tones can come out of many speakers depending upon your guitar/skill, and it then becomes other issues.
My special edition wine red drri came with the Jensen alnico 40 watt speaker (very inefficient)....which breaks up early. Sounds nice.
But it could'nt cut through sometimes. I went the other extreme and put in the Wizard, which is around 103 db....vs the 96 db.
Much more headroom/loudness. It's a big magnet, but fits.

This topic has been around the world and back a few times
I have tried several speakers in DRRI's and the one that works the very best for me has been the Swamp Thang by Eminence , BIG low end and I do mean BIG !!! and yet all the top end sparkle you could ask for.
thats the under 100 bucks best (((in my opinion only)))

A weber 12A150 would be my all time best choice but dude they be expensive !

It does seem as though the guys who leave the "jensen" made in Italy speakers in for the long haul like them after a LONG break in period.

Exactly jeffp
I'm not one of those who fusses over good questions no matter how many times they are asked.
you can find a ton of opinions about the best speaker for a drri due to the fact that so many have asked the question.

My love for the Swamp Thang is due to the tight bottom of that speaker, i play 90% clean with a little dirt and so it lends itself well to very authoritative chords and lower notes, the swamp thang also has a sweet top end, not overly dark like some speakers can be and it won't send a spike through your brain with overdone highs and mids.

The only thing I might imagine would make me smile bigger would be a nice Real Jensen P12N or as mentioned earlier the Weber version of that speaker.
If I did the weber I would order it at 50 watts light dope to keep her clean all the way up the volume range or at least most of the way up.

DRRI speaker hunting is fun, can be expensive but so worth it when it comes together !

Tubes absolutely also make a HUGE !!!! difference, find your self a nice Mullard GZ34 a nice pair of RCA, Sylvania, Tung-Sol (USA) 6V6GT's the very best 12AX7 or 5751 in V-2 and you'll be amazed at what a DRRI can sound like !!! (((Bias adjustment is a MUST)))

Using a bias right (the tech guys will say its wrong) I set each tube at around 34ma
The factory setting on most drri's I see are 28ma stock
Warm them power tubes up a touch and they will sing !

The head would be a fun change of pace, being able to swap out cabs will give you a huge pallet to paint with !

Is the head limited to 8ohms like the combo or did they put multiple taps in it ?
