I've heard the same thing....however, I've also heard from a few good techs that they are just as good as others.
They must be working fine in my BD chassis, given the sound.

One of mine gave up the ghost in three months. The Caps in my 76 Twin went over thirty years and were only changed as a precaution, not due to failure. No thanks, I'll stick with F&T, Mallory, Sprague etc. They are used in this amp for the same reason the boards were thin without being double sided with plated through holes, why the tube sockets are mounted the way they are with long, thin standoffs connecting to boards, instead of being mounted to the chassis and hand wired, why ribbon connectors are used, why cheap jacks are board mounted...... Because it's cheaper to produce.

The same construction techniques are used by many manufacturers using quality components with a lot less issues. The board in my 5e3 clone is thick, Mil Spec double sided, wide traces, plated through holes. Really nice stuff. I would have gladly paid another three hundred bucks for an amp with better components. I always trusted Fender since 1965, now they'll never get another dime from me. My clone is all the Fender I want or need for now. Next up a Marshall 18 watt clone.

Serious boutique amps builder never use IC caps .

What is the story of those tech ? Did they look for the better or just to make the amp working ?

And some customer do not want to pay more for good stuff . What tech should say ?

stratele,
The way I look at it, If you're not willing to upgrade what failed in you're amp the first time, why bother going through it again and again. My tech gave me the choice of upgrading parts. The guy I sold that HRDlx to got all the repair records along with a list of the upgraded components and the original set of tubes as well as a new set of JJ's that were only a couple of months old. I also transferred the seven months warranty that was left. That amp spent a long time in the closet after the last repair because I didn't trust it to gig with. I think the III series addressed some but not all of the issues.

This thread:
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/shock-brothe ... -caps.html

discusses Illinois caps. Hoffman sells them.
The very first thing i noticed....and emailed builder about was i noticed he used Illinois caps. I did'nt press the issue, as I've heard Illinois just has a bad rap for a specific run of caps in the late 90's.
Irregardless, to the best of my knowledge, Illinois caps were just used as the larger electrolytes in my chassis.
The amp sounds AWESOME.......so I'm not complaining. Whether they hold out will be another question. ps......I recapped and put them in my Pignose G60VR 5 years ago and they are still going strong.

Hoffman sell Illinois , and ...?

Fender , Gibson sell cheap guitars and cheap amps too , yes they are good for the beginner. That is Illinois cap .

But they sell high end stuff too .

I fix many amps and guitars that the customer said they sound very good before .
After I fix and install some good quality parts they said they never hear sound so good before .

here's a link that addresses Taiwanese IC's:
.

Accordingly, these caps should now be OK

I never said a thing about sound. That's all subjective anyway. I really don't think anyone can tell the difference in sound between one brand cap or another. I know I can't. I'm talking reliability and what I know happened to me. I don't care who says what on a forum. Just like you need to take what I say with a grain of salt. These caps are cheap period. IC caps are made in Taiwan. I won't use them in anything I build. Good components aren't ridiculously expensive. I'd gladly pay $10-15 for a good capacitor, but that's me. The pedals I build use better components than are in the HRD series amps, better boards too. The fact is many caps are made smaller to save space. You see them start to bulge on the ends. I didn't expect a failure so early. Years ago I made most of my living playing out, my equipment had to work or I didn't. You can only practically carry so much spare gear.
Use what you like. I'm not the capacitor police. I'm just stating that I won't use them in any of my builds.

Yep.....I'm catching your drift. Gonna watch those caps closely.

Yep. Fender amps have a 5 year warranty where a company like Victoria has a lifetime warranty. You won't find an IC cap or a cheap component in a Victoria amp.
I remember when Fender had a one year warranty but I never had to use it ever. Not one of my original Fender amps ever saw a shop and I've owner Fender amps sines 1966. The last two I bought were a 76 twin that I bought new and a 74 Champ that I still own. It's due for a cap job for sure.
