If you want a new amp, but only have $300-$400 to spend, what would you recommend?

All suggestions are welcomed!

I will start off with one suggestion from a friend. He suggest a Fender Blues Deluxe. he found his on craigslist for $400. So, what do you say?

Occasionally ebay has a Pignose G60VR, which i have one of.
A great giggable amp.......and can get great tube overdrive at low volume.
Very underated (and unfortunately, discontinued) amp. If you can watch for one on ebay for $400 "buy now" or less....dont wait and get involved in the bidding war. Snag it!

That, or a HRDlx, either would be a fine amp for the money.

I enjoy playing classic rock, blues, some metal. (One classic tone I especially like, is the tone that Leslie West would get with his LP Jr., plugged into a Sunn Coliseum P.A. That tone cannot be reproduced with emulation/modeling amps. It was a very natural overdriven/distorted tone). So, I'm thinking if I can find a good, low cost tube amp, I will add any effects through individual pedals. I'm tried to trying out all of these various cheap, modeling amps. Most of them (and I've wasted money on more than I care to say) have turned out to be junk. So, I'm beginning to wonder if there is such a thing as a good, cheap amp. But, when budget dictates,....

Give a Peavey Classic 30 a whirl. It is not an overly clean amp and it is not meant to be. It does classic rock very well. The overdrive channel is very usable. You'd need help from pedals to go into metal territory.

I have this amp , with 12 other amps , the Peavy Classic is my worst sounding amp and it is in perfect order.......

I suppose that's why there are many manufacturers making many different types of amps. To each his own. I think the Peavey Classic is a great sounding amp. For someone who wants to spend 3-400 and enjoys classic rock, it is worth a test drive.

One disadvantage of living in a small town is that there are no big music stores, where I could go and actually play my guitar through an amp to see how it sounds. The music store here carries mostly Line 6 stuff and most of the Line 6 stuff (in my price range) sounds like junk to me. Last year I purchased a Marshall MG10CFX, after only hearing it demonstrated in a youtube video. But, it was a piece of junk! Sounded like I was playing through a tin can. I've been through this with Peavey, Vox, and the ZT Lunchbox. The ZT Lunchbox was interesting though. For a small amp, it is extremely loud! Nevertheless, even with overdrive and distortion pedals, I could get virtually no sustain through it.

Some context might help. When I was a young man, in the mid to late 60s, early 70s, I played all the time. In 1976 I essentially quit playing (too much to get into here). In those days I played a Fender Strat, through a Marshall Stack.

Fast forward to 2010, health issue essentially push me into early retirement. After being encouraged by family and friends (many of whom I performed with in my youth), I decided to start playing again in 2010 (only as a hobby). I was shocked at how much I retained and how quickly what little skills I had 35+ years ago, came back to me. (Some limitations of course, arthritis keeps my hands from moving as fast as they once did). Still, it is a great hobby. But, what I was more shocked about was what I found when I got back "into the loop" and started looking for equipment.

Most quality guitars now are priced for professionals, amps also. Way too many choices, modeling amps and pedals have become the norm, and companies that once carried quality in everything they made (Fender, Gibson, etc.) are putting out junk along with everyone else.

So, I will keep searching. I am thinking that there is probably a sleeper of a product out there somewhere, that will meet my budget, and still sound top quality. It will just be a matter of finding it.

Thanks to everyone for all your input.

As there are no wattage restrictions, for the budget I would recommend finding an old silver face champ.
