Hi! I have a question regarding the '68 Custom Princeton Reverb. (all stock at this point, including the tubes)

After years of using a DRRI I found it to be a bit too much amp for my current situation, and I was ready for a change, so I've traded to a '68 Princeton Reverb. I love the sound of the new amp, not to mention that awesome portability, but it breaks up somewhat too early for my liking. (maybe I should have gotten the '65, eek)

Don't misunderstand- I'm not hoping to get this amp squeaky clean with the volume on 9; I'm just finding between 4.5 and 5 or so a whole lot of overdrive is introduced; I'd like to squeeze just a little more clean headroom out of this amp.

Tactics that have been suggested or occurred to me include:
-a solid state rectifier plug in
-a different speaker (I don't think I'm hearing speaker distortion)
-different power tubes
-different output transformer

Thoughts on these, or other suggestions? Thanks!

Sorry about the title- that should be "68", not "60", of course. :P

IIRC...replace V1 with a 12AT7 for a little more headroom and a bit less gain.

It breaks up quick because they reduced the negative feedback, so it's not speaker distortion. But, that Celestion is a $35 speaker. A better, more efficient speaker would help some, not a lot, but some.
