Not another thread about power amp rattle in an HRD... But I might have a tip for some people. I recently replaced the power valves (tubes if you're on the other side of the pond) in my HRDIII, taking out the GTs and installing JJs as I prefer their tone. The downside was that I now had the dreaded resonant rattle that seems to plague HRDs everywhere.

Tonight I was having a poke around and a ponder and noticed that the 'bear trap' valve retainers weren't actually gripping the base of the JJs - in fact they were some way off and the valves could move around pretty freely. I took out the valves and bent the metal clips inwards, then reinstalled the JJs. Now they were firmly gripped.

Turns out the base on a JJ 6L6 is some 2-3mm less in diameter than a GT - a noticeable difference. I've not had chance to play the amp at gig volume yet to see if the rattle's completely gone, but at living room levels it seems to have done - result.

I buy JJ's from Eurotubes and get their anti rattle rings. Problem solved for my HRD.

I've ordered some of those silicone rings too, to make doubly sure. Just thought the spring clip issue was relevant, too.

That will not help rattling tube retainers, only rattling tubes.

Never said it would, the retainers are simple to adjust. However mine never needed it.....
