Hi Fender Fans-
My name is Jay. I'm new to the forum, but have been playing guitar and enjoying Fender products since 1978 when I bought a used '72 Tele for $300. it took me 3 months to pay for it on layaway.

My main Fender since 1983 has been a '65 CAR Jazzmaster I bought for $240 at a pawnshop in East Lansing Michigan.

I play in an instro-surf band called Fronkensteen. I have augmented my #1 Jazzmaster with a 2008 AVRI Jazzmaster.

I recently bought a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Reissue and am using it as my main gigging amp. I was reading this morning on the web about removing the v1 tube to increase the gain in the Vintage channel. I always use the vintage channel and the idea of adding some more oomph (and maybe headroom) to it appeals to me (we are a trio, but our drummer is a heavy hitter...very loud.).

Anybody done this simple mod? Is it safe? What are the results? Most importantly, does it void the warranty on the amp?

I should also add, I use an extension cab with the amp, a 15" 8 ohm Eminence Legend.

J

Thanks!

I do it all the time on my drri. An added benefit is that that little bit of extra filament current available, helps the JJ 6V6's produce even more output power (i believe JJ 6V6's do draw more current than spec 6V6's).
Have'nt had a tube in V1 slot for a long time.

Yeah, the JJ 6V6S draws about 50mA more heater current than the 6V6GT. I'm not sure about the current draw through the tube, itself.

Thanks!

I tried it today and noticed a big difference. More fullness, more bottom end ("I know...That's what she said!"), More of everything. It just sounded "better."

We have 2 gigs this weekend in Northern Michigan so I wanted to give it a try this week and then if it worked, leave it that way for the gig. So far, so good.

Cool stuff!

BTW, the '68 CDR is not a reissue, it is in the "Vintage Modified Series" of amps.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
