So I should be looking at something more like a Mesa boogie TA-15? I don't really want to move away from fender but this looks like it would be just the ticket.

Can you describe what kind of distortion/overdrive you're looking for? Any particular genre, like classic rock Marshall type saturation? Hard rock/metal mega compressed distortion? Thick and chimey blues type overdrive?

Are you trying to replicate a certain players tone; SRV? Slash? Hammett? Hendrix? BB King? Albert King or Collins?

I'm basically trying to find a SRV'ish kind of tone without destroying my ears. Before I get blasted I realise that no one can nail that guys tone, especially at low volumes but somewhere in that field of sound. I'm going to demo a TA-15 tomorrow simply because it seems like a wonderfully versatile amp at lower volumes but I'm also going to stick a Bogner Ecstasy Red in-front of my 68 Deluxe at the sort of volumes I can play it at home and see how I'm feeling. I'm just having difficulty bonding with it currently as I feel I'm not getting the most out of my purchase and 95% of the time I never will.

I have the Bogner Red and it sounds awesome with my 68 CDR as it did with the
HR DLX3.
That pedal can give some great low gain tones as well as higher gain.
The 68 loves pedals.

This amp comes very tonefully alive with Tung Sol 12ax7's in V1 and V2.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how well it responded to those tubes.
The stock GT's don't hold a candle to the Tung's.

I also have a Jan Phillips 5751 in the PI position, and a Sovtek LPS 12ax7 in the reverb send. 5751 gives a smooth harmonic balance and a bit more clean headroom. The higher gain in the reverb send brings the reverb closer to the original tone and blends the verb better to my ears.
The 12at7 makes the verb a bit too distant compared to a 65 DRRI, which also uses a 12at7 for the send.

You've got a great amp don't give up on it, especially given how much these amps respond to tube changes.

So you had to use a 12AX7 for the reverb driver to get decent reverb?

Yeah, the verb on the 68 isn't as nice as the 65 DRRI or the Twin.
The 12ax7 improved it but it's still not as good as the others, don't know why.
I think it was you that pointed out the verb boxes were not the same?
It's interesting that Fender uses a 12ax7 for the return but not the send.

Stock it sounds distant like it's separated from the original tone.
I have a TC Electronic HOF verb pedal and I use it with the amps verb and it's really nice.
I don't use a lot of verb but I like it to "fill" in the sound.

Man I got some amazing tones from that amp tonight. Clean is just so freaking harmonic and sweet and lush. And the added touch sensitivity is noticeable, at least to me cause that's something I highly value in amps and it's hard to find.
Found some sweet settings on the Wampler Triple Wreck pedal using it's "vintage" setting, and cranked the treble this time. Wow.
I've been thinking that I should just get the scratchy volume pots fixed under warranty instead of swapping for the new 68 Vibrolux.
But I've got to play the Vibro first, if it has the tone and sensitivity of the 68 CDR it's gonna be a really tough call.

Where in Indiana are you?
I'm in the NW corner.

Yes you are right in the middle. :)

BTW, I decided to take a chance and ordered the 68 CVR.
Should have it in a couple or 3 days.
I'll hold onto the 68CDR so I can compare them side by side before I commit to sending the CDR back.

Yes, this is true. You will not find a tube amp you can crank up to get the mythical power tube overdrive *AND* at the same time not annoy the neighbors.

Such an amp does not exist and never did.

Power tube overdrive is a myth. Those who claim that power tube overdrive is "better" than preamp overdrive do so because they like to play loud, and have no clue how to EQ an amp to sound good when playing quietly.

SRV used *multiple* overdrive pedals to achieve distortion, and also to bludgeon the preamps of his amps. He often used *multiple* amps, all of them cranked to high heaven. He was loud, but that does not mean he had infinite distortion going on. Most great players use much, much less gain than noobs think.

You can get close to an SRV type sound (at bedroom volume levels) with a clean Fender amp and a Tube Screamer. Maybe two Tube Screamers.
Use the volume knobs on the pedals to control the loudness.
At very low volumes, what you lose is the ability to get a clean sound by just turning down the guitar's volume. At very low volumes, there's only so much space between loud and soft, dirty and clean.

Having an amp you can't turn up all the way means you have more headroom.

This is a good thing.

You will be able to hang with a drummer. Possibly even a bass player.

Trust me, going to a jam with a 12 watt amp and not being heard because your amp is totally cranked and no one can hear you is no fun.
