hello folks

First post here! after 7 long years of not owning a guitar I was in a fantastic guitar shop with a good friend of mine a few days ago and I happened to pick up an EJ 2 Tone Strat. I held it for about 30 seconds and that's all it took to make me realise enough is enough and I cannot take not playing any longer. I walked out with a guitar that day even though my friend didn't ;) - I got home and for 24 hours, scoured forums, read reviews, watched youtube videos, rang various stores and came to a firm decision to treat myself to one of the lonely new 68 Deluxe Reverb Amps. I remember my friend used to have a Twin Reverb which I adored the tone of and with all the new bells and whistles on the new 68 models I figured, Why not?

but here's where I need advice. As I have been away from playing for so long I had completely forgotten just how dang loud good valve amps are (I also have my wife's patience to consider) I simply cannot play this wonderful thing loud enough to reach that nice valve break-up sound which is what I crave so badly. I did crank it a few days ago when I was alone and it was great but that is once in a blue moon and frankly it was uncomfortably loud! it could fill a stadium......... I'm basically having to use it on a 3-4 volume.

So my question is this. To achieve a classic natural bluesy breakup tone would a decent Overdrive pedal do the trick at these volumes (I'm Thinking Fulltone's stuff, Soul Food, TS-808 or 9, Mesa Flux-Drive) or am I better cutting my losses and selling it (or seeing if I can return it) and getting a amp with a more manageable volume that I can really crank to naturally overdrive? (Vox AC15, Blues Junior perhaps?) or would these amps even being 15W reach a similar volume as the 68 Deluxe to reach break-up? I've also toyed with the idea of a THD hotplate to attenuate the signal but I'm unsure on what kind of results I'd get tone-wise.

Well that's about it, I live in the middle of no-where and work 6 days a week so going to a decent store to try all these options is a real pain so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Good question. I have'nt yet heard a convincing pedal to match the compression of my drri at 7 on the volume, and using guitar volume control.
My initial thought is to get a divorce.

This is an option and I'll mess around with that thought a bit. Do you find that backing off on the guitar volume somewhat dilutes the tone?

Anyone else have any opinions or even better have first hand experience with my dilemma?
People using OD pedals with a 68/65 DRRI on manageable volumes? or maybe using an attenuator?

I run the bogner blue pedal and red into a 68 twin and I can play at low volumes or high! very warm amp like pedals. 22watts isnt really that loud for some yeah but I cranked it at the store its decent. For bedroom levels its loud so with a good pedal you can play low.

Getting power tube distortion translates to LOUD (for home use) even with 15 watt amps.
A master volume amp gets you closer, but still.....
It's not quite the same, but an OD, pedal seems to be the best compromise. There are far too many good ones to list, but Wampler 57 Tweed or 65 Black are among, IMHO, two of the best.

Yes, for distortion at low volume, I think that a pedal is a better option than an attenuator, and neither is the same as the cranked tone.

BTW, the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is not a "reissue", it is one of the "Vintage Modified" series.

I'll go along w/the consensus. I keep my DRRI on 3 most of the time at home, & for some dirt I use a Blues Driver. It just seems good enough. If you live out in the middle of nowhere it would be a shame not to be able to crank up a Deluxe Reverb once in a while & use a pedal the rest of the time.

Here's a different pedal idea: The Fender Mustang Floor is a modeling pedal. You can set up any of the amp models so that their power tubes are overdriven. You get the computer modeled version of the sound you are looking for and you can try the sound of a driven 59 Bassman, a 57 Twin or Deluxe, or 65 Twin Reverb or Deluxe reverb, or several different Marshall and Vox amps. The Super Sonic model is good for preamp and power amp distortion for a real 'creamy' sustain and OD. You can also add models of some overdrive, chorus, tremolo, delay, etc effects pedals. The Mustang Floor is $200 and can be bought on the Guitar Center website. I live in eastern Oregon and the nearest Guitar Center is in Boise, ID (about 3.5 hours drive each way). So I buy a lot from the GC website. Check it out on the Fender website where you found this forum.

Thanks for the responses folks, I appreciate it! after a talk with my partner I think the fact I'm going to want to play every night and ill be unhappy with it always on 2-3 with a pedal plugged in means its going to have to go :( - Lesson learnt. Fortunately the store are happy to exchange it.

Now I need a more suitable replacement.......... Blues junior? or a Hot rod Deluxe as it has a master volume. Will I run into the same problems with these amps?

Of those two (I own both), the HRDlx is more versatile and can get great distortion at very low volume. For my taste, I recommend a preamp tube change, namely a 5751 in V1 and a 12AT7 in V3.

A 5751 really helped calm my HRD down and the tone is a sweet if not sweeter with this valve in V1. I am using a JJ valve. The drive nad more drive feature provides the tone and the master volume brings it down to room volume.

The JJ 5751 is a good tube, and for the price it's hard to beat. The only one that I have found that I like better is a GE, mainly due to the tone being a bit warmer and slightly fuller.

Thanks for this info guys its really helpful, I'm leaning towards a HRD or a Blue's Deluxe Reissue. Which one of the two would be considered easier to overdrive at lower volumes, I've watched a few vids of people cranking the pre-amps and lowering the master on both these amps and it looks like what I'm after I just don't want a repeat of my first mistake and them be to loud all over again!

I own a Hot Rod Deluxe, and I can categorically say, this will not solve your volume issues. Yes, a 5751 in V1 position will tame it slightly, and you can run the volume low on either channel, but in that respect, it's no different to your 68DR. It won't sound as good as it can when you push it.

My opinion; keep the 68DR and get an attenuator, it's a wicked amp and an attenuator is a great option.

Or, if you don't want to go the attenuator route, you'll need to get a 5-10 Watt amp to really enjoy pushing the power tubes and not annoy the wife.
