Looking at Mojotone and Tube depot right now. Is there anyone else I should consider?

Keep in mind that I'm a little concerned that I might Johnny Tremain myself soldering it all together.

Leaning a lot towards this one ...

There is also Weber and Marsh.

I'm sure others will be able to chime in with more companies.

Yep loads to choose from, coincidentally we mentioned that amp a few days ago.

Tube Depot kits use PCB's (printed circuit boards) which can be delicate to work with/modify and service at a later date. You will find the boards supplied by some of the other kits mentioned much easier to work with.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I should have checked the vintage amp forum first.

Anywho, leaning towards one of the Mojotone kits now. Just trying to figure out if I can use my 16 ohm speaker (12" v30) with any of these.

As already suggested, check out Marsh kits. Most are actually re-branded Mojo kits, but have instructions and tech support, which most kit makers(including Mojo) do not. IIRC, they are cheaper than the same exact kit if bought from Mojo.

Depending on the kit, you may be able to use a 16 ohm speaker. Depends on what output transformer they use. If you get a head-only kit, you're more likely to have a
multi-tap OT. Most "Fender" kits will be 8 ohms or less, however.

Not really, no.

Marsh kits use some MojoTone parts but you can't expect detailed instructions. Some of their kits only come with a schematic and a list of materials included but no other instructions. Many of the internal components are of better quality than other kit suppliers and they therefore have a higher price, not lower.

Well, you could be right, I haven't seen any of their kits lately, but I helped a friend with his Marsh 5E3 kit a while back. It was identical to the Mojo 5E3 kit I had built about 6 months previous to that, component by component, and about $75 cheaper. At that time, even the pictures on their respective websites were identical. Don't know about their other kits.

Part of me is saying I should buy the new appliances my house needs. Another part wants a roland blues cube stage. The builder in me really wants to make this.

If I had to order today it would be the mojotone tweed kit without cab and speaker. For the cost of that stuff I can buy the tools to make my own and then I would have the tools for future projects.

I should probably buy those appliances before I buy this. I'd hate to cheap out on a new fridge because I upgraded to a blackface kit.

It's no fun writing a blues song while your beer get's warm in the fridge.

Since my condenser left me
My beer needs a new place to dwell
Deep in the tank of the toilet
In the far bathroom stall
oh, baby

Sad effort, I know.

Mate here is a build log I did of that kit on this forum. Don't fear the PCB, it is Military grade, double sided thick traces, very heavy duty, NOTHING like what you might see in a Blues Junior for example. PCB's are fine if they are done right, look at Toneking amps for example.

Here's one of my builds of the Tube Depot Kit.
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=53481&hilit=Snowy

I built a couple of those amps and can vouch that they sound awesome, one of the best amps I've heard actually.

Another great company for kits is Trinity amps in Canada, superb quality, very detailed build manual and there is a supportive forum where other builders of the same amp will give helpful advise. The owner of Trinity, Stephen logs in every day and is very customer support oriented. People often overlook all that stuff and just focus on kit prices, but trust me if you have issues or need advice, suddenly it has real value.

Here's their kit.

I've built a Trinity 5E3 kit and they get an A+++ in my book. I opted to not use the OD caps in mine. He was offering the original run Sozo mustard caps as an upgrade but the last time I talked to him they were out of them, Sozo quit making that particular cap. Stephen is very willing to help in any way he can and, if this is your first build it would make it a good experience for you.
