Well,
I'm a big fan of the Super Reverb. To me there's no better Fender amp ever done! I'm proud that I own an original '64 Super Reverb that is in an excellent condition.

Well, I tested the new Custom Deluxe Reverb and I must say: WOW! Great amp!!! Love it, BUT:

FENDER: PLEASE BUILD A CUSTOM 68 SUPER REVERB!!!!!!! ;-)

The recent Super Reverb issue is not that good, but I can imagin a Super Reverb build with the same quality and specs as the Custom 68 DR would be a great amp!

Just a thought..... ;-)

Is it just me or what? You have a 64 Super Reverb that is one of the all time greats and you want a newer amp that won't be built as well or as serviceable? Just crank the '64 and be done with it!

I have to say that a new RI amp or 68' custom would be as well built as the originals. Pros & cons. Pros for vintage - The originals used higher quality materials vs the RI. They are easier to service. Cons - they need to be easier to service because they are more unreliable than they are today. Even when upgrading to the safer power cord still the newer post CBS amps are much safer & reliable. Another point of view is that the claim of the vintage sounding better than newer amps may be true to some point. But, the vintage amps gave speakers that are broken in over the years. Even a 79 Super Reverb will sound " better" than a new RI because the speakers are worn in. If you have one of the newer RI amps leave the stock speaker in it for some time, play it, plat it often & break it in. I've a FSR Deluxe Reverb with the stock Jensen P12 alnico for about 8 months & I play through it daily. It sounds better by the week. I will gladly cut heads with anyone with an all original 65' DR any day of the week & you would never be able to convince my tone or reliability is any less. I hope I'm not coming across as arrogant, but Fender, Marshall, Orange, & others who build amps know what they are dong with the components they are using, that's why they are successful for the last 40-60 years. If you buy any of these brands of amps that offer reissues, you have to play them & break them in to get that sound you are looking for. I love the old vintage stuff, but I am not willing to pay more or as much for a vintage amp that will need more than regular tube amp servicing. For a tone that is sooner or later captured once the modern amp is broken in.

Sorry Theseeker, but spend more time around this forum and do some searching and you'll find that the QC of Fenders new amps is NOT what it should be or used to be.

I would stack any of my vintage Fender amps against your newer amp. As for my fragile vintage amp, in this case my '65 Super Reverb, has been serviced exactly once since new (new power chord and a CAP job) and it is ready for another 49 years of duty, and it looks damn near perfect. Most of Fenders new amps won't even last that first 49 year period let alone the next 40 odd years!

Learn before you make such statements.

I have to disagree based on what I have: 65 reissue DR, SR, TR, FSR DR, & 59 Bassman LTD RI, Marshall Bluesbreaker 30w 2x12. not so much as tube change. Gig regularly with the Bassman & the DR RI and not one single hiccup. The SR & FSR DR gets the most beatings in my home studio were there volume is never less than 8 on the DR or 7 on the SR. 1-3 hours daily for the last 4 years on the SR, not a tube, or speaker change. Just sounds better as time goes on. My point is give the newer amps a chance. A buddy of mine keeps his 66 Twin reverb in my studio, we jam together 1-2 times a week & his amp pops & crackles and sounds inconsistent at times. It's been to the shop twice in the last 18 months. I have had experience with the older amps especially Marshall, and while great & iconic, with the exception of collectible value, I would take a new Bluesbreaker over a 60's original any day. The vintage Fenders are great but I won't pay that much for a 65' DR. it's not worth it to me to me tone wise. I have read plenty of reviews and I have found that people who have trouble with new amps especially a RI from anybody, is they right away start changing tubes & speakers and the complain that it does not sound like right, without giving the amp a chance to come into its own. So reviews & opinions are what they are, someone else's view or opinion. I hope I don't come across harsh or angry, but these newer amps are not that terrible. I once had a Fender HR deluxe, with the tubes mounted to the board, not a great design. Knowing that going in I was careful as I knew it could nor take too much of a beating. It blew a tube about 6 months, changed out a matched pair and not a problem. The amp BTW sounded great, traded it & some cash for the DRRI though.

I will put my new 68 twin against the old ones and boutique any day! I played a old silverface cranked and the next day I cranked mine and still had a smile on my face. The deluxe 68's are sweet also if they have no problems:)

Well, what I wanted to say is, that, of course, no one can beat a '64 Super Reverb that is in original condition, speakers included.
But play more than 30 shows a year with my SR and I'd like to keep it in this condition.

I was really suprised how great these new '68 custom amps sound. You can't compare them with the other vintage reissues from Fender.

If they build '68 Custom SR that has the same tonal quality than they did with the custom DR or Vibrolux, I would be more than happy. I would buy it and take it with me on the road and for some special shows I'd bring my '64 SR.
It's not as bad as if the new Custom SR broke than my '64 SR.
That's what I wanted to say...

Fabian
